With climate change, pollution, and depleting ozone layer, your skin may be fighting hard to remain healthy and glowing. Therefore, as the first step of defense, you start following a skincare routine. It’s a great thing. Isn’t it? However, due to a lack of knowledge on skincare, you end up doing more harm to your skin than good. And that’s not such a great thing after all!

To amp up your skincare routine, you need to quit some of the habits that are pulling your glow down! A simple habit like taking long hot showers in winter is comforting but can be putting your skin’s health on the side. Even a dietary habit like munching on candies can make your skin pop more pimples than before. So, to help your out, we have made a list of the common skincare mistakes that may be sabotaging your skin goals.

Dr Stuti Khare Shukla, MD Dermatologist, Founder of Elements of Aesthetics, spoke to HealthShots about the skincare mistakes that may be damaging for you.

Top skincare mistakes you must avoid in winter

  1. Over exfoliating skin during winter

Exfoliating during the winter season may be good to remove all the dead skin and sebum from your skin’s surface. But, winter is already a harsh season for your skin and you shouldn’t really go overboard with your face scrubs. According to Dr Shukla, “Exfoliating on a regular basis might cause dry and sensitive skin which might progress into other skin problems. If at all, you want to exfoliate, you should do it once every two or three weeks.”

2. Not applying sunscreen

This mistake probably stems from the misconception that no sun means no sunscreen. People feel that during cloudy days of winters, it is not important but it is extremely crucial to apply sunscreen because the UV rays are still there even on the cloudiest days of the year. Hence, make sure you use a broad spectrum sunscreen during the winter season as well.

3. Not moisturising enough

Dry skin is the most common problem that you may face during the cold chilly season. However, not applying enough moisturizer during the winter months is going to make it worse. The moisture is extracted by the drop in temperature hence, it is important to moisturize your skin often. “Make sure you choose a moisturize which is hyaluronic acid, shea butter based or glycerine based because during the winter, the body moisture is affected by the cold wind and environment.” says Dr Shukla.

4. Not letting your skin breathe

You must have seen a beauty guru follow a 10-step skincare routine on social media, but it may not be for you! Indulging in an over-complicated skin routine may deteriorate your skin further. You lose the dime, you lose the glow. Is that even good? A lengthy skincare routine may also clog your pores and cause more breakouts and acne.

5. Using unclean makeup brushes

Your skin loves hygiene. That being said, when was the last time you washed your makeup tools? If you’re being called out, it is imperative to wash your makeup brushes and makeup sponges after each use. Your makeup brushes can attract a lot of dust and bacteria while being displayed out on your makeup vanity. Using dirty tools can further aggravate acne and zits and skin infections.

6. Not being gentle to your skin

Rubbing your skin with a towel after a shower or using a bead scrub on your skin is what makes it angry. Use gentle strokes on your skin without tugging or pulling it while using all your skincare. Do not rub but pat dry your skin using a microfibre towel after washing.
