Most of us bask in our youthful glory, and that’s because you don’t have to work too hard to get glowing skin! For some, it only requires applying moisturiser and using a good cleanser: yes, that’s all.

But when you see the first few fine lines on your face, that’s when reality strikes, and you begin to obsess over your skin routine. These lines indicate that your skin has started ageing and requires more attention. Now it’s but natural to stock up on anti-ageing products to delay the process, and with a ton of products available today, that shouldn’t be a problem right? Let’s get the facts straight: these creams might delay more wrinkles from showing up, but it won’t make the ones that are already there disappear!

No wonder then that women have always wondered, ‘when should I start using an anti-ageing product?’. And that’s why to answer this legitimate question, we have an expert with us Dr. Sonal Bansal, Consultant, Dermatology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.

“We need to remember that ageing is of two types: internal and external. It first takes place on the inside, and then reflects on the outside in the form of fine lines. That’s why you should concentrate on prevention using anti-ageing products. Hence, you need to include anti-ageing products when you still have the chance to delay their appearance with the right care.”

What are the first signs of ageing?
“One of the first signs of ageing that majority of Indians notice is the loss of fat from under the eyes. This gives a sunken look to your eyes along with the appearance of defined lines. The skin around your eyes is more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your face. It is the first one to get affected by ageing,” she explains.

What is the right age to start using anti-ageing products?
“Most people should start using anti-ageing products by the time they hit their early 30s. You still have a few years before you start seeing visible signs of ageing. If you start using effective products before those signs appear, you have a chance to delay ageing by some time.”

Which anti-ageing product is recommended?
“There are various products that are available in the market today, and one can always pick something that suits their skin type. However, all forms of retinol are great. Nowadays, you will find many creams as well as serums that have retinol as a primary ingredient. It can be extremely helpful when you’re looking to get smooth, supple skin,” she adds.

So ladies, wait no more? The clock is ticking, so pick up that anti-ageing product if you are in your early 30s!
