Valentine’s Day is one of the most special days for couples. They express their feelings and love for one another on this day. If you also have someone whom you love, then you too must be planning for your outfit for the big day, food, how you’ll spend your day, and much more. While preparing for the special day, avoid making beauty mistakes which can harm your skin and hair!

To help you understand where you need to be careful while indulging in skin and hair care, HealthShots spoke to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist, and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics.

Beauty mistakes to avoid

We know it’s the day of love and everybody wants to look their best. Glowing skin, rosy lips, manicured nails, and a perfect hairdo just speak of romance. Dr Kapoor says, “When it comes to getting ready for Valentine’s Day, self-care is the way to go. It is not just about one day it is a whole week of celebrations and excitement. Trust us, you don’t want a pimple coming out overnight, or the skin looking tired with dark circles and sunken eyes. But for this, you need to be a bit careful with your beauty practices.”

Whether you are going out for one day or have a whole week of dates planned, here are 5 beauty blunders that you must avoid:

1. Trying new skin products close to V-day

The skin is unpredictable when it comes to reacting to new products. New skincare or beauty product might now work the way you want. Stick to products that suit your skin and use them as instructed. If you have dry skin then opt for moisturizing and hydrating products and if your skin is sensitive then fragrance and harsh irritant products will only harm your skin. So, don’t play around with products!

2. Applying too many products

We know it is tempting to use extra skin care products hoping, they will be super effective, but that is not a good idea. When it comes to getting the skin ready for the day of romance, less is more. For face moisturizing, a pea-sized amount is enough. A coin-sized blob of sunscreen is all your body needs. When it comes to using cleansers, toners, etc. restrict to grape size, and when applying serums or treatments, a rice size quantity is enough. Start with the lightest product first and then move to heavy products.

3. Over-cleansing and exfoliating

Cleansing too often or exfoliating in the hopes of getting smooth skin is never a good idea. It strips the skin of natural oils and can cause breakouts and dryness.

4. Not applying to make-up the right way

Cakey foundation, too much highlighting, the wrong makeup base, and overdone lashes are not really going to attract anybody. In fact, they can impact your look negatively. That’s why it’s essential that you know all the steps and follow them to look your best.

5. Avoiding moisturizer

This is the worst thing that you can do to your skin. Not applying a required amount of moisturizer and applying makeup on dry skin can make your make-up look cakey and can even irritate your skin. Opt for a good moisturizing base before applying the make-up and keep the makeup looking natural and let the lips do the talking.

6. Not removing make-up before sleeping

You might think it is just a little lipstick on your lips and you can sleep with it. But leaving it on can dry your lips and cause lip lines to form. Similarly, mascara or eye-shadow can seep inside your eyes and damage your vision. It just takes 5-7 minutes to remove the makeup and cleanse your face. Don’t forget to do it.

7. Overuse of hair styling machines

In order to look the way you want, don’t forget that the overuse of anything can be harmful. Not only can hair styling tools damage your hair, but using homemade ingredients or hair masks without researching whether it’s good or bad for you can prove to be harmful for your hair. So, make sure you’re not experimenting with your hair and skin.
