That’s because skincare comes with a lot of mistakes and myths, it can sometimes be difficult to find whether or not you’re doing well.

Always keep in mind your skincare regime should be tailored, according to your skin type and its needs. And that means not all skincare steps are for you. Yes, it’s time to become acquainted with the unnecessary beauty routines that you need to ditch.

Dr Ajay Rana, renowned dermatologist and aesthetic physician, tells HealthShots, “We all have a habit of cleansing, toning, treating, and moisturizing regularly, but sometimes these skincare routines are totally unnecessary. The best skincare routine is one that is ever-changing, from season to season and from year to year.”

Drop these beauty routines right away:
1. Daily exfoliation

Exfoliating every day can strip the skin of its natural oils, which can cause breakouts. In fact, if your skin is sensitive, exploitation can do more harm than good. Dr Rana says, “Exfoliating is good but daily exfoliation is not required. It helps to get rid of dead skin cells, removes excess sebum and opens up clogged pores, which helps reduce blackheads and acne. Exfoliating the skin will also help it absorb skincare products in a better manner, and at the same time, reduce the size of pores. The best way is to exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week.”

2. Toners are not for everyone

Toners aren’t necessary for everyone. Using a toner for every skin type is totally unnecessary. “It is most suitable for people who have enlarged pores and oily skin. So, people who have smaller skin pores should not use a toner”, says Dr Rana.

3. Moisturising serum

Using only a hydrating serum alone cannot give you healthy and glowing skin. It totally depends on the skin type of a person. If somebody has reactive skin, using a serum can help them soothe their skin, suggests Dr Rana.

4. Anti-ageing creams

Anti-ageing creams help to reverse your signs of ageing. But they are not here to do wonders, especially if you’re using them alone. It’s totally unnecessary if you do so. Dr Rana says, “As we grow with age, it is totally a myth that only anti-aging creams can do miracles for your skin. Apart from anti-ageing creams, our skin depends upon various factors such as diet, lifestyle, and cosmetic surgeries and treatments.”

5. Face masks

Dr Rana says, “Daily use and application of sheet masks and face masks will not do wonders for every skin type. It is only beneficial after facial or any kind of beauty procedures.”

6. Using many beauty products at the same time

“Using too many products at the same time is totally unnecessary. Our skin reacts when we try out many new products at the same time. Follow only basic cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, and gradually build up again to include exfoliation 1-3 times a week, depending on your particular skin type. Serum and masks are needed,” says Dr Rana.
