We often try to dig in for complex issues to blame for our skin related problems. But have you ever wondered that some of our simplest food and lifestyle habits may be the culprits?

Yes, our skin’s health can get disrupted due to tiny mistakes that we usually overlook. And instead, we keep chasing that perfect glow and blemish-free skin with expensive products and time-consuming routines. Ladies, let us tell you what most beauty experts and nutritionists would also tell you – the first step to good skin starts with healthy eating. So, why not try to adopt a few changes in our daily habits?

Dr Anupriya Goel, Dermatologist and Dermatologist and Medical Director of Berkowits chain of clinics, points out 5 factors that may be affecting our skin unknowingly. Once you know the effects, you may pull the plug on these things.

The expert shared the insight via an Instagram real captioned: “Don’ts for skin”. She added that these are “never good for your skin as they can break down your collagen and cause faster aging”.

These are the 5 factors that can affect your skin care journey:

1. Excessive use of sugar:

Consuming excessive sugar through fizzy drinks, sweets, sugary foods as well as beverages like tea and coffee can be harmful for your skin. Excess sugar in your bloodstream can cause glycation, a natural chemical reaction which happens when sugar levels in the bloodstream spike beyond what our insulin can handle. This can trigger faster aging. Also, excess sugar can aggravate skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

2. Excessive use of salt:

Consuming too much sodium can be harmful for your body, especially skin. Excessive salt causes dry and cracked skin, leading to a dull and lackluster appearance. Further, acne breakouts start happening on the face and other body parts. It can promote adverse skin reactions like dehydrated skin, premature aging, and sometimes oily skin.  Though salt is a vital ingredient of the kitchen, it can further exacerbate the situation of bloating and hypertension. Hence, keeping the quantity of salt intake in check is a must.

3. Excessive use of caffeine:

Caffeine intake causes dehydration in the body. When we consume excessive amounts of caffeine, it causes our skin to dry out and makes our skin look dull and aged. It leads to a toxic build up in the body, thereby affecting our skin. A study reveals that drinking too much coffee can cause your skin to wrinkle prematurely and become lax with time.

4. Stress:

Stress is one of the major causes behind deterioration of our body. It not only affects you mentally but physically as well. This happens because stress causes your body to make hormones like cortisol, which signal glands in your skin to make more oil. Oily skin is more prone to acne and other skin problems. Also, stress slows down the skin care regime and healing process of the skin. It interferes with your daily skin care.

5. Direct sunlight:

The skin uses sunlight to help manufacture vitamin D, which is important for normal functioning of the body. It promotes bone health and provides healthy skin. But as we all know, excess of everything is bad. It can be a major cause of skin damage as well. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause redness, pain, hot skin, blisters, dehydration, itchy and tight skin, tanning etc. The outer layer of the skin has cells that contain the pigment melanin. It protects our skin and creates vitamin D. Too much exposure to the sun can cause skin cells to die, damage, or develop cancer.
