High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive medical therapy that delivers focused ultrasound waves onto the skin, leading to the formation of targeted micro coagulation zones. This causes collagen remodelling resulting in skin tightening. While the technology holds huge promise, there are several myths and misconceptions around the procedure. It’s time we debunk these myths and understand the true potential of HIFU treatment.

Myths about HIFU treatment

Myth 1: HIFU Is meant for cosmetic purpose only

Fact: while the technology has become more popular for cosmetic purposes due to its ability to rejuvenate and tighten skin, it has wider applications that extend beyond aesthetics. HIFU has been used to successfully treat a host of conditions like uterine fibroids, liver tumours, prostrate cancer and bone metastases. Also, it offers a non-invasive alternative to radiation therapy or traditional surgery.

Myth 2: Instant results are seen with HIFU treatment

While HIFU is effective and offers good results, it is essential to be realistic with the expectations. For some, the results may appear sooner, for others it may take some time to be noticeable. The body needs time to respond and stimulate production of collagen and initiate natural healing. Over a period of several weeks to months, gradual improvement can be expected.

Myth 3: HIFU treatment causes pain

Fact: This is by far one of the biggest myths. Contrary to the belief, HIFU is not painful and delivers ultrasound waves focused deep into targeted tissues without causing any major discomfort to the patient. And while some may feel mild sensations during HIFU treatment, it is usually well-tolerated without the need for anaesthesia or sedation.

Myth 4: HIFU is a new and yet to be proven concept

Fact: While HIFU is considered a novel concept, in reality, it is not and has been extensively researched and developed in the past couple of decades. Early 1990s witnessed the first HIFU treatment and since then, a number of studies and clinical trials have validated the safety and effectiveness of the procedure in various medical applications.

Myth 5: HIFU is a risky treatment with severe side-effects

As compared to invasive surgical procedures, HIFU is a safe alternative. Moreover, being a non-invasive technique, HIFU removes the risks associated with open surgery like bleeding, infection and extended recovery time. Furthermore, the side-effects of HIFU in anti-ageing treatment are mild. The side effects majorly include swelling, redness or numbness in the treated area which generally resolve by itself in a few days.

Myth 6: HIFU needs only one session

Fact: The condition being treated and individual patient factors decide the number of HIFU treatment sessions that are required for individuals. While some patients may see desired results in a single session, others may require more than one session to attain optimal results. Based on the specific needs of individual patient, the treating physician will determine the appropriate treatment plan.

In summation, HIFU is a groundbreaking therapy with myriad applications in the medical field. Clearing misconceptions around the treatment is vital to ensure that individuals are well-informed about its potential benefits.
