What is a Korean double cleansing routine?

As the name suggests, this process requires cleaning your facial skin twice. All the lazy girls like me will wonder what’s lagging in their one-step cleanse routine? Well, a natural looking skin is textured with bumps and uneven patches. And just a minor wipe with micellar water may not exactly clear the impurities and sebum collected in your pores. This is where a double cleanse routine steps in!

To master the steps of double cleansing and know more about its benefits on Indian skin, HealthShots spoke to Dr Nivedita Dadu, a renowned dermatologist.

“Double cleansing gets rid of grime that sits on top of your skin, along with makeup, excess oil, and dead skin. It is a cleansing method that will ensure in-depth cleansing before applying your skincare”, says Dr Dadu, Founder and Chairman of Dr. Nivedita Dadu’s Dermatology Clinic.

Here’s how double cleansing can work for your face:

Dr Dadu reveals “The process of double cleansing involves washing your face using two products: an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.

First cleanse:

The first step of cleansing using an oil cleanser draws out oil-based impurities such as sebum, SPF, makeup, and pollutants. For this, use an oil-based cleanser, a cleansing balm or even micellar water. Rub it into your skin and wipe off with a cotton pad.

Second cleanse:

The second cleanse removes water-based debris such as sweat and dirt. It prevents sebum buildup and bacteria, which can help fend off acne-related flare-ups. For achieving the final cleanse, use a foaming cleanser. Lather it up on your face and rinse it off using lukewarm water.

Benefits of a double cleansing routine:

1. Removes sebum buildup

Excess sebum buildup causes infections that lead to acne. Oil-based cleansers are great at removing oil-based dirt, residue, cosmetics and most importantly sebum, which is overproduced when someone has acne.

2. Cleans out the makeup residue

Double cleansing should be your go-to method, Especially if you’re a heavy makeup wearer. A two step cleanse gives you a safety net for preventing breakouts and acne. These skin issues are common when your pores are clogged with makeup residue and pollutants.

3. Make the most of your skincare

You will be amazed to know that double cleansing can also improve the efficacy of the other skincare products. Basically, you need a clean canvas kind of skin before you slather on your serums, AHA’s and BHA’s and moisturizers. “A double cleanse, especially in the evenings, can help your other products penetrate better. This way, you tend to get the most out of your basic PM skincare routine.” adds Dr Dadu.

Is double cleansing for all skin types?

The thumb-rule say that if your skin is sensitive, a dual cleanse may aggravate your inflammation and redness. So, people with extremely sensitive skin can pass out on this trend and stick to a mild cleanser and water rinse.

However, if you’re wearing makeup, a double cleanse becomes a necessity to clarify those specks of glitter and makeup. It may cause oxidative stress and signs of aging to your skin.
