If you are slightly dark-skinned, you may face pigmentation in various parts of your body. The one very noticeable place that you might observe this pigmentation will be around your mouth. If you are tired of using concealers and other makeup products for these dark patches or discolouration around your mouth, let us help you with some home remedies that can come to your rescue.

This discolouration around the mouth is usually an effect of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is not a skin condition but is caused by hormonal imbalance, exposure to sun or the increase of melanin (a substance in our bodies responsible for the darkening of our skin). It is also often observed in pregnant women because of the hormonal changes. Studies have shown that the deficiency of certain vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin D are also responsible for this pigmentation.

This is not so much a beauty flaw but some people are eager to get rid of it. Health Shots is here with 4 natural home remedies that can help you lighten the skin around your mouth!

Home remedies to get rid of pigmentation around mouth:

1. Potato

It is impossible to talk about skin lightening and not mention potatoes! A 2017 study published in the Research Journal states “Vitamin C and B-complex as well as minerals like potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc are good for the skin. Apart from that, pulp obtained from crushed raw potatoes, mixed with honey, can work well in skin and face packs. This even helps to cure pimples and spots on the skin.” So, rubbing potato slices around your mouth will definitely help in getting rid of the pigmentation.

2. Rose water

Make a routine of applying rose water on your face before sleeping. You can dab it on with cotton and leave it on for the rest of the night. This will help remove the whole day’s dirt, hydrate your skin and leave you refreshed. A study published in 2019 shows that rose water contains the major phytoconstituents which are polyphenolic compounds flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, saponins which are mainly responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and hence, can help in skin lightening.

3. Lemon juice

Again, a great skin brightening agent. The citric acid present in lemons helps eliminate the darkness in skin. Rub a few lemon slices on the pigmented area, this will also exfoliate your skin and help remove the dead skin cells.

4. Vitamin E

Applying things rich in vitamin E or including them in your diet is a foolproof way of taking care of your skin. Aloe vera is a very rich source of vitamin E and hence, will help you get rid of the pigmentation around your mouth. You can also take vitamin E capsules.

Apart from these home remedies, make sure that every time you step out in the sun it is not without sunscreen. Apply it generously and protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun!
