I tried Japanese skin fasting for a month and it made me glow brighter than a bulb

Sometimes, what your skin really needs is a break from all the attention you shower on it. Enter: skin fasting, the Japanese trend of refraining from any and ALL products.

They say, when life throws lemons at you, make lemonade. That’s exactly what I did after I was strictly advised to stay indoors by my doctor after suffering from an asthmatic attack while Delhi was being driven crazy by air pollution.

Not stepping out also meant spending a lot of time on social media and actually following the trends posted on it seriously. One such trend was that of skin fasting, wherein you stay away from make-up and skincare products to detoxify your skin, and let its natural oils do their job.

So, I decided to take advantage of my “house arrest” and give it a try. Extremists completely steer clear of make-up and ALL skincare products including night creams, serums, cleansers, and toners while following this Japanese skincare trend. I, however, decided not to do away with my water-based moisturiser and my super-mild soap-free face wash—thanks to my dry skin and well, air pollution.

One month into skin fasting, here’s what I noticed:

1. My acne cleared up
With no foundation, fancy creams, or oil blocking my pores, the zits that had popped up on my face chose to leave me alone for good. I mean, obviously, all zits usually deflate within three to four days, but in my case, one zit’s exit is accompanied by another zit’s grand entry. So, what was great about skin fasting was the fact that previously-existing pimples were gone and the new ones didn’t pop up.

2. I was glowing—naturally
Since I wasn’t using any make-up or skincare products except, of course, a moisturiser and some sunblock before stepping out–my skin’s natural oils made my face glow brighter than a 100-watt bulb. #JustSaying.

Curious, I decided to turn to professor Google and found that the products we use on our skin can strip it off its natural oils and hamper the skin’s ability to renew the damaged and dead cells. This leads to a dull face. However, with no products hindering the renewal process, the magic definitely happened on my skin.

3. And my skin became more even-toned
Perhaps, the renewal of skin cells also helped lighten the pigmented areas around my chin and the sides of my nose, as well as a few acne spots here and there–thus, giving me a more even-toned complexion that before.I’d be exaggerating if I say the dark patches and spots disappeared completely. But I need to credit skin fasting for lightening them fosho.
