Waxing is one of the most commonly used ways to get rid of body hair. But if you’re someone who likes to do it yourself to save money and time, you might want to try it at home! But how to wax at home in a safe way? Well, waxing should be done in a proper way to get the best results. While getting it done by a professional, there may be less to worry about, but you should exercise some caution if you want to do it at home.

Waxing mistakes you must avoid

Waxing is a quick and affordable method to get rid of body hair, but it is also a little painful. So, if you plan to wax yourself at home to remove all the unwanted hair from your body, it’s crucial to follow the instructions precisely for the best results. Unfortunately, a lot of people commit simple waxing mistakes that can cause discomfort and skin issues.

Health Shots reached out to Dr Navnit Haror, Founder and Director of Derma Miracle Clinic, who listed down 5 things to keep in mind while waxing at home to avoid skin issues.

Before you read the do’s and don’ts of waxing, let’s tell you what you can do while you’re preparing for your home waxing session.

Do these 2 things to prepare your skin for waxing:

1. Exfoliation: It’s important to prepare your skin. This means exfoliating it and removing any excess hair. Dr Haror says, “The best way to exfoliate your skin is to use a sugar scrub. You can make your own sugar scrub by mixing sugar and olive oil together.” Apply the scrub to your skin in a circular motion, and then rinse it off with warm water.

2. Trim hair: Make sure you also trim/shave the area you’re going to wax. This will help the wax adhere to the hair better and make the process a lot smoother.

Here are 5 mistakes to avoid while waxing at home, according to Dr Haror:

1. Don’t skip exfoliating or cleaning your skin as it’s crucial that your skin is wax ready
2. Don’t apply too much wax, it should be thin enough to see through
3. Don’t peel the wax off before it’s completely dry otherwise this can cause skin irritation
4. Don’t wax the same area more than once a month
5. Don’t overheat the wax. Before applying it keep it at the room temperature

Who should not wax?

  • Avoid waxing if you have a sunburn or other skin irritation
  • Avoid waxing if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Avoid waxing if you have any open wounds
  • Avoid waxing if you’re on your period.

Now, it is imperative that you understand how to wax at home.

Steps to wax at home

Dr Haror says, “Waxing at home can be a great way to save money and keep your skin looking its best. But if you’re not careful, you can easily make mistakes that can lead to skin irritation, ingrown hairs, burn marks, blisters and worse.” To avoid these side effects and to make your waxing experience at home a lot more efficient and a lot less painful keep follow these steps:

Step 1: Make sure your skin is clean and dry before you start.

Step 2: Apply a sufficient amount of wax to your skin in the direction of hair growth after removing it from the wax heater once the wax is hot. Use a wax applicator to apply it.

Note: Apply a thin layer of wax to the area you’re going to wax.

Step 3: Once you have applied the wax, grab a wax strip and rub it on the area; so that the wax will attach to it.

Step 4: Then, quickly peel it away from your skin in the direction that your hair grows in, in one go. Don’t apply too much pressure when you’re removing the wax strip.

Step 5: To relieve the pain, immediately press your palm against the waxed skin.

Note: You can also apply a soothing cream or lotion to the area after waxing.

On the other areas of the body that you wish to wax, follow the same steps. After you’re done, use a warm cloth to wipe your body (and then with a cold cloth). Give your body time to dry. Repeat the process every two to four weeks.

Takeaway

Lastly, whether you’re a beginner at waxing or are a pro, it has been established that waxing is one of the most easy, affordable and accessible methods of hair removal at home.
