Caring for your skin is not just about cleansing and moisturising the face. It should involve other processes and body parts. But with the number of products available in the market, it can get tricky to choose the items you need to have and use for healthy skin. The most important part is to at least follow the basics of skin care to ensure your skin does the job of being a barrier very well. Read on to find out how to build a skin care routine.

Why is skin care important?
Your skin is a remarkable organ that needs a lot of love and attention. A skin care routine provides many benefits:

1. Protection against environmental toxins and UV radiation

Your skin acts as a shield against environmental toxins and the harmful effects of UV radiation. A proper skin care routine reinforces this natural defence mechanism, says dermatologist Dr Amit Bangia.

2. Hydration to prevent dryness and discomfort

Keeping your skin adequately hydrated is essential to prevent dryness, itching and discomfort. Moisturising is a fundamental aspect of any skin care routine.

3. Anti-ageing benefits

As we age, our skin becomes susceptible to wrinkles and age spots. A well-structured skin care routine can combat these signs of ageing, helping you maintain a youthful appearance.

4. Boost in self-confidence

Healthy and glowing skin can boost your self-confidence and overall sense of well-being. As they say, when you look good, you feel good.

How can I build a healthy skin care routine?

Having a skin care routine should be your priority. Here’s what you can do:

1. Cleansing

Start by cleansing your skin twice every day to remove impurities and excess oil. This fundamental step sets the foundation for a healthy complexion, shares the expert.

2. Toning

After cleansing your face, pour a few drops of toner into your palms and gently apply on your face. You can use a toner with hydrating formulas two times a day to avoid dehydration. But if it is an exfoliating one, use it just during night time.

3. Exfoliating

If you are using a toner with exfoliating properties, skip this step. If not, then use an exfoliator once or twice a week. An exfoliator not only cleanses your skin, but also removes dead skin cells. You can use physical exfoliators that have ground grains. These can be rubbed on the skin to get rid of dead skin cells. There are also chemical exfoliators that are more like leave-on treatments. You generally don’t have to rinse it off.

4. Moisturising

Lock in hydration by applying a suitable moisturiser. Proper moisturisation helps to keep your skin soft and supple. Find the best moisturiser online for your skin type!

5. Using sunscreen

Never underestimate the importance of daily sunscreen application. It provides vital protection against UV damage, preventing premature ageing and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Should skin care change with age?

Your skin’s requirements evolve as you age, so adapt your skincare routine to different stages of life.

1. Skin care in your 20s

The focus should be more on prevention and maintaining youthful skin. So, establish a skin care routine that emphasises on protection and hydration.

2. How to take care of skin in your 30s

This is the time when you need to start incorporating antioxidants. Addressing early signs of ageing such as fine lines and uneven skin tone becomes important when you touch 30, says Dr Bangia.

3. Skin care in your 40s

When women reach mid-40s, they start nearing the menopause stage. You may face skin dryness and dullness more than usual. So, prioritise hydration and introduce anti-ageing products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and retinol.

4. In your 50s and beyond

This is the time when you may have to use richer moisturisers to combat dryness and consider specialised skin care products that are made for mature skin. You must look for skin care products that have vitamins C and A as ingredients.

What are some common skin care mistakes to avoid?

Some women do follow skin care routines religiously, but they make some mistakes too. Here’s what to avoid:

1. Over-cleansing

Excessive cleansing can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation, so stick to a gentle cleansing routine.

2. Sunscreen neglect

Always apply sunscreen, even if it rains or gets chilly. This habit is vital for preventing premature ageing as well as protecting your skin against cancer, says the expert.

3. Skin type ignorance

Prepare your skin care routine to your specific skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, combination or sensitive.

Consistency is key to achieving and maintaining healthy skin, so stick to your routine diligently.
