It starts feeling like you have to fight a battle with your own skin when you have acne. Breakouts can wreak havoc not just on your face or body, but also your confidence, irrespective of the season. We all know it’s a horrible feeling.

Don’t get us wrong — we love winter for the hot chocolate and warm foods it brings, but those pesky breakouts are a complete deal-breaker. In such a situation, the last thing you want to do is tamper with your skin by using a thousand products to experiment with. At this point, your skin is devoid of oil and moisture leaks out of it, causing dryness. This happens because when it’s cold, there is less moisture in the environment, and the skin’s natural moisture barrier is compromised. This also means it doesn’t really have the ability to fight bacteria and infection!

No, we aren’t scaring you! It’s always better to be armed with knowledge, and that’s why we’re giving you all this information. As always, we also have a solution for you! This time, we have the perfect skincare routine for acne-prone skin this winter.

Are you all set to find out?

1. Cleanse your skin twice

Whatever your skin type, you must start your skincare routine with a good cleanser. It is important to cleanse your skin twice a day when you have acne-prone skin. This step helps remove all kinds of impurities, oil and dirt that can clog the pores, resulting in blemishes, whiteheads or blackheads.

We’d say you skip an acne-fighting face wash to cleanse your face because it can wreak havoc on your skin and cause more dryness. Instead, you can go for some natural cleaners that contain ingredients like tea tree oil, milk and honey.

Here are 2 DIY cleansers you can easily make at home to restore moisture to your skin:

i. Tea tree oil cleanser

2. Tone your skin twice a day

Once you are done cleansing, don’t forget to apply a toner to open up your pores. It’s a great way for the skin to prep up for the next step and be ready to absorb the products properly. In addition, toning also helps to remove excess oil from the skin, fight blemishes, and eliminate blackheads. Take a ball of cotton and apply a few drops of toner. Here’s how you can make a toner right at home instead of buying chemical-laden products:

i. Rose water

Ingredients:

1 tbsp rose water
1 tbsp witch hazel (alcohol-free)
1 tsp fresh lemon juice

Method:
Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle and spray it over your entire face.

ii. Green tea toner
You can also try this green tea toner which is rich in antioxidants and can help to neutralise the damaging actions of free radicals. It’s also anti-inflammatory in nature and can help reduce redness.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup green tea
3 to 4 drops tea tree essential oil

Method:

Shake ingredients together before misting the toner over your face.

3. Moisturise your skin at least two times a day

By now, you already know how important it is to hydrate your skin. So, it is critical to moisturise at least twice a day. If you don’t, your glands will produce excess oil, and that means clogged pores. We bet you don’t want that!

Considering that you might already be using topical treatments for acne, your skin would probably be in dire need of hydration. A light moisturiser must be used twice, both in the morning and evening, to reduce the risk of developing dry and peeling skin.

Oh, and before you ask us, you must have a separate night cream.

4. Use a sunscreen every single day

We know the pandemic has made life very different for us because we’ve been cooped up in our homes for months now! But, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to use sunscreen. Many people with acne-prone skin skip this step because they think it clogs their pores and causes more breakouts. But, it’s important to remember that not using sunscreen can also harm your skin, and trigger premature ageing. There are plenty of lightweight sunscreens available today, so go for those options!

5. Treatment product for night

Apart from using a good night cream, you can also consult a dermatologist and use treatment products that can soothe your skin, and reduce breakouts. Some of them even lighten scars.

But here’s the deal: do not use too multiple topical treatments at the same time because you might just end up with dry and irritated skin. We understand it takes some time to see results, but patience is important here!
The last word

Apart from following this routine, it is important to keep your hands off your face and reduce stress levels. Believe it or not, breakouts get worse when you’re stressed! And as you all know, your skin shows how healthy you are. So, if you follow a healthy diet and exercise religiously, you are certainly going to reap benefits. Oh and lastly, even if you want to pop a pimple, don’t do it!
