From wine to vodka, I used alcohol on my face and got glowing results

Alcohol might not be great for your health, but when diluted and used a cleanser, toner, or face mask--it can give you glowing skin.

There is a lot to be said about drinking alcohol. It gives a great buzz, but a nasty hangover. It tastes amazing in cocktails but nonetheless takes a toll on your kidneys and liver. And although it promises pleasure, it also wrecks your immunity. Quite a double-edged sword drinking alcohol is.

But here’s a zero side-effect use of alcohol that we bet you didn’t know about: it’s great for topical applications. In fact, many times I’ve used alcohol on my skin via DIY masks and toners and have got glowing results in return.

But first, a word of caution
Before you go on to try my skincare hack, make sure to dilute the alcohol that you’re going to use. Also, steer clear of using soap on your skin for 24 hours after using alcohol on your skin. Before using the alcohol on your face, do a small patch test on your arm to see whether or not the spirit suits you. Also, if you have dry or extra-sensitive skin, then please don’t use alcohol on your face.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, here are the skin benefits of alcohol  that will surprise you:

1. Red wine
Not so long ago, wine facials became popular for their skin-brightening effect. This is exactly what prompted me to try out its cheaper, less time-consuming version at home and it worked—thanks to the presence of antioxidants in this fermented beverage. Red wine not only helps clear the skin of its toxins but helps remove dead skin too.

In fact, red wine also contains a high concentration of polyphenol resveratrol, a chemical that helps reduce inflammation. And thus, applying it on the skin can also reduce acne.

Here’s how you can go about it: Pour some wine in a bowl, soak a cotton pad in it, and apply it on your face gently. Leave it on to dry for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with water thereafter. You’ll notice the difference yourself.

2. Vodka
Vodka can make for a great skin cleanser/make-up remover when used in a diluted form. Add two tablespoons of water to one tablespoon of vodka. Use a cotton pad to soak up the mixture and use it to remove grime and product from your face. This diluted vodka cleanser will also unclog your pores and allow your skin to breathe.

3. Rum
I can’t stress enough on the importance of diluting the rum well if you don’t want to end up with a rash or a burn on your face. Use two parts water and one part rum. Once again using a cotton pad, wipe your face with the rum concoction and get ready to experience smooth, clean, and acne-free skin. Rum not only helps remove the dead skin cells and dry patches, it can even kill the acne-causing bacteria on the skin.

4. Beer
The conditioning and smoothening effect of beer on your hair is a proven advantage of everyone’s go-to alcoholic beverage. But if there are some extra cans left, you can apply it on your skin with cotton the same way you apply wine. Doing this ritual once a week can give you an even-toned skin and dull your blemishes too.
