In line with the latest cosmetic and beauty trends, there are two main sought after contenders: filler grafting and facial fillers. These techniques promote face rejuvenation, help create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing face, and aid facial reconstructive efforts due to ailments and accidents.

While facial fillers rely on injecting active ingredients into the dermis, to improve the elasticity, smoothen the skin, and remove wrinkles, facial grafting redistributes fat from one area to another (excess to deficiency), by extracting the most optimal fat cells.

As per a research published by the journal ‘Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’, both these techniques are effective treatment modalities for human immunodeficiency virus-associated facial lipoatrophy, providing high rates of facial volume restoration and patient satisfaction.

Here’s how facial grafting differs from facial fillers

The primary difference between these techniques can be broken down into three categories:

1. Composition

Facial grafting involves using small amounts of fat, removed from the abdomen or thighs. The fat is purified, and injected in the requisite areas of the face. Facial fillers on the other hand, consist of biocompatible substances such as hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, and calcium hydroxylapatite.

2. How soon are results visible

When it comes to grafting, as per research by Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America, the goal is to restore a natural appearance and function, while preventing distortion of the eyelid, nose, or lips. These results are manifested gradually, and in some cases, more than one sitting may also be required.

Facial fillers boost collagen production, and are used to manage volume of the face, enhance contouring, and remove wrinkles and fine lines. The results are visible immediately or gradually, depending on the type of filler being used.

3. How long do results last

Although results of facial grafting may take time to manifest, they end up lasting indefinitely. Also, choosing which technique to opt for is dependent on your requirements. In case you seek fullness of face, then grafting will help you achieve that, and would last longer than a facial filler.
The results of facial fillers could last for anywhere between a few months to a year.

If you are still confused, then how about you consider these key pros and cons of facial fillers and facial grafting:

Facial fillers are relatively safe and rarely cause pain, swelling, and redness, post treatment. However, its effects do not last for a long time, as opposed to grafting, and may require revisits. Facial grafting involves fat transplant, and while its effects last a long time, it might not be suitable for people with sensitive or acne prone skin.

Facial fillers are more suitable for small facial features such as cheeks, chin, and lips. Whereas, grafting can be used for enhancing the whole face.

So, depending on your cosmetic and beauty needs, you could choose the technique that is best suited for you, post consulting with an expert.
