Can you guess the body part that shows the earliest signs of ageing? Yes, your eyes! Experiencing fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation indicate that your skin is losing its elasticity and ageing. Therefore, you need to give some extra attention to the skin around your eyes. But what makes the eye skin area so sensitive?

First, the skin around your eyes is thinner plus more delicate than skin on other parts of your body. In addition, the eye area doesn’t have as many oil glands and collagen as the rest of your face and body, making it more prone to dryness, droopiness, lines, and wrinkles.

Here are certain tips you need to follow to take care of the skin around your eyes:

1. Moisturiser

Moisturisation is an important eye skincare step, because our eyes lack oil glands (our skin’s natural moisturiser) hence, they can be more prone to dryness. Plus, squinting and rubbing our eyes can create crow’s feet and other wrinkles, but moisturising your skin regularly can help prevent further breakouts and wrinkles.

Choose an eye cream that suits your skin type.

2. For fine lines

Fine lines and wrinkles are the first signs of ageing, which means your skin loses elasticity and firmness. Opt for potent ingredients that are known to stimulate collagen production like:

  • Retinoid
  • Retinol
  • Vitamin A derivative
  • Peptides

They can help to improve the overall texture and go deeper into the skin to reduce wrinkles, thereby improving the appearance of fine lines.

3. For hyperpigmentation (dark circles)

The appearance of dark circles under your eyes can be a cause of natural ageing, lack of sleep, and allergies, reduced levels of fatty tissue around eyes, thinning skin under the eyes, and more.

To combat dark circles, there are certain compounds you need such as vitamin C, vitamin E oil, and cucumber.

4. For puffiness

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity that can cause sagging and puffy eyes and make your under-eye area darker. So, if you need a quick fix for reducing puffiness and darkness just grab a couple of bags of caffeinated tea. Applying tea bags can prevent puffiness and dryness in the eye skin area.

5. Use sun protection

Besides all these issues, protecting the eye area from the sun’s UV rays is a must. That’s because harmful UV rays can cause fine lines, dryness, and wrinkling of the skin around your eyes, and plays a big role in the skin ageing process. Always apply sunscreen properly on your face to prevent premature ageing.

6. Be gentle always

Rubbing your eye area harshly can lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines or can make the existing signs of ageing even worse. Always apply the products with your pinky fingers gently and don’t use rough treatment on the skin. Otherwise, it can irritate your skin. All in all, from applying products to removing products from the skin around the eye, it’s important to be gentle.

7. Watch your diet and lifestyle

Foods high in salt and sugar as well as some poor lifestyle habits like lack of sleep and smoking can wreak havoc on the skin around your eyes. Certain dietary and lifestyle changes can improve the skin around your eyes.
