As you step into your 30s, your skin starts showing signs of ageing. As widely said as it is, aging is inevitable. However, delaying the complex phenomena of skin ageing is something we shall strive for. Some of the most sought-after remedies are to prevent wrinkles, crow’s feet, and fine lines around the mouth.

On our lookout for a new concoction for preventing skin aging, we came across something that’s naani and daadi approved! A badam and malai face mask was my go to as a kid. And the sheen I’d get on my face was something visible from space! I’m not sure if I should blame the addition of years to my age or replacing this one with fancy and luxurious creams, but that glow went away.

But, on the weekend, I turned to the same skincare mask and to my surprise, it worked. My dull and lifeless skin felt fresh and radiant instantly! The good old almonds and fresh milk cream worked better than the most hyped up skincare products I had been flaunting on my vanity.

To approve its safety on skin, HealthShots spoke to Dr Vidushi Jain, Dermatologist and Medical Head at Dermalinks.

“The nutrition and crunchy taste of almonds is widely appreciated. But now, much research has revealed its skin anti-ageing properties too. Almonds are a rich source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant and since ages its extracts are used in creams for skin moisturisation and anti-aging properties. Fresh cream or malai not only exfoliates the dead skin cells but also nourishes it.” says Dr Jain.

Here’s how to make a badam and malai face mask to prevent wrinkles

  1. Soak 2 almonds for an hour. If possible, soak them overnight.
  2. Remove the skin of the almonds.
  3. Using a clean mortar and pestle, crush almonds into a fine paste.
  4. Add a spoonful of malai or fresh cream straight from the milk.
  5. Mix them both to combine.

Here’s how to use this anti-ageing mask:

  1. Clean your face using a mild cleanser.
  2. Apply a thin layer of this anti-ageing mask on your face.
  3. You don’t need to avoid the undereye area since this mask is so gentle on the skin.
  4. Let it sit on your skin for 15 minutes. Do not over dry the mask.
  5. Wet your hands and pat on your face.
  6. Rub off the mask in circular motions.
  7. Wash it off using lukewarm water.
  8. Do not apply anything on your skin for a few hours.

Some nutritional qualities of the 2 ingredients that prevent wrinkles are listed below:

1. Almonds

Almonds contain zinc, vitamin E and other antioxidants. They are known for hydrating and moisturizing properties. Because of the good amount of antioxidants and omega 3, almonds help to fight early signs of aging. They also help in controlling sun damage by decreasing the free radical damage. The presence of essential fatty acids and zinc helps to control whiteheads and acne. “Almonds also help to lighten skin tone and remove tan because of mandelic acid present in bitter almonds which has exfoliating and skin lightening properties”, adds Dr Jain.

2. Malai

Malai has moisturizing properties as well as exfoliating properties which makes it an amazing and skin safe product. It has natural moisturizers which hydrate the skin. “The lactic acid in cream helps to exfoliate the skin, thus, making it shiny and supple,” says Dr Jain. Malai also contains vitamins and certain proteins which stimulate collagen production and has anti aging benefits as well .

So, a combination of almonds and malai makes for an amazing moisturizer and skin lightening product but would require some modifications for different skin types. It is safe to use this mask twice a week.
