Your skin needs TLC round-the-clock, but according to dermatologists night time is ideal to repair and rejuvenate your skin. So, if you don’t have a nighttime skincare routine, then you’re going to miss out big time on nourishing your skin. That’s why we have for you a list of products that you should only apply at night for soft and supple skin.
Retinol improves the texture of the skin by exfoliating it, reducing visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and dark spots, while improving cell turnover and collagen production. It acts as a free radical that helps to repair the damage at night, making the skin more photosensitive during the day.
Using overnight masks helps to give you well-hydrated, plump, and refreshed skin in the morning. Always use it while you are getting your beauty sleep.
Natural cold-pressed oils contain several nutrients that nourish the skin. They help in building a healthy barrier function. These face oils come with added essential oils that have many skin benefits. Essential oils contain methoxy psoralen that can induce skin irritation when exposed to heat, sweat and UV rays. So, be cautious and only use it at night!
The skin produces more sebum in the middle of the day, while it is less at night. So always apply heavier, creamier moisturisers at night, when the skin needs it the most!.
These creams are heavier and form a nourishing layer on the skin to repair it overnight, thereby giving you hydrated and nourished, plump and rejuvenated skin in the morning.
AHAs and BHAs are exfoliating acids that can help to reduce rough skin texture and improve the appearance of fine lines. They also help to remove pore-clogging dead skin cell buildup. Using these acids at night can also result in increased sensitivity to the sun.
Vitamin C is commonly found in serums and provides a strong dose of antioxidants. It makes the skin look brighter and helps to improve acne scars. It also makes the skin a little more sensitive to UV damage.
“At night, our main concern should be repairing and rejuvenating the skin. Our skin always needs to be nourished. But night-time is when we should address personal skin issues. Cleansing the face should be the first step for a night-time routine. Then, apply an ultra-nourishing and replenishing serum. Choose a serum that has soothing and hydrating ingredients to bind moisture to the skin without clogging pores. Then use a moisturizer, this will keep the skin hydrated throughout the night and ready for the morning. Always look for a moisturizer that is oil-free in order to not add to the amount of natural oil the body produces,” explains Dr Nivedita Dadu, a celebrity dermatologist and founder and chairman of Dadu Medical Centre.
We expose our skin to pollutants, UV rays, dirt, and grime during the day. At night, our skin gets the chance to undo the damage, rejuvenate, and create new cells. Skincare ingredients help to boost cell turnover rate and because new cells are so sensitive, they cannot be exposed to harsh sunlight. Applying such ingredients at night also provides them with enough time to work on certain skin issues.
“At different times of the day, our skin produces more sebum. This happens most in the morning. So, it’s best to use these ingredients at night, when the skin is rejuvenating itself, and the cell turnover rate is at its highest,” concludes Dr Dadu.
