Your skin says a lot about what’s happening inside your body and plays a big part in keeping you healthy. As the skin is the largest and most visible organ of your body, any changes to it can reveal a lot about your overall health. A lot of underlying illnesses first manifest as skin issues. For example, the development of bruises, spots, hyperpigmentation, and rashes on your skin can all be signs of much more serious conditions.

The link between skin and health

Skin conditions can be upsetting or stressful to deal with, but you can be better prepared by knowing what to anticipate and by adhering to advice that encourages healthy skin. Skin problems range widely, however, the following are some of the most prevalent:

1. Acne

It’s not only teenagers who get it! Adult acne, which is typically brought on by greasy skin that clogs pores, affects a lot of people. They can be a sign of hormonal balance and an unhealthy diet that you’re eating.

2. Eczema

Numerous non-contagious skin conditions that result in red, irritated, dry, and itchy skin can all be referred to as eczema. They can indicate that you’re stressed or have an allergic reaction.

3. Psoriasis

Psoriasis manifests as thick, rosy skin areas covered in white or silvery scales. It’s caused by an immune system disorder that triggers skin cells to multiply uncontrollably.

4. Stretch Marks

Pinkish or reddish streaks can appear everywhere, but frequently on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts. They also appear in overweight people and pregnant women.

5. Dry, itchy skin

If even after applying moisturizer your skin is dry and itchy, you might be suffering from atopic dermatitis. This condition can cause your skin to crack and itch. It is mostly associated with asthma and hay fever.

Further, the mind-body connection, often known as the mind-skin connection is also real. There are three primary categories of psycho-dermatological illnesses, according to psychologists:

  • Stress or any other emotional state can cause skin issues.
  • Psychological issues brought on by deformities of the skin.
  • Psychiatric conditions that show themselves as skin problems.

Stress impact on skin and overall health

Stress can aggravate psoriasis or rosacea, lead to more severe and persistent acne, fragile nails, hair loss, worsen or trigger hives, and increase sweating. Some of these skin issues can be prevented or reduced by adopting appropriate stress management techniques.

How to maintain healthy skin?

In terms of genetic vulnerability to specific skin disorders, some people are more prone than others, but everybody can take adequate care of their skin. Drinking plenty of water, washing your face both in the morning and at night, taking a bath every day, exercising regularly, and consuming enough antioxidants and vitamins can greatly help in maintaining healthy and glowing skin. Supplements containing phytonutrients like anthocyanins, punicalagin, and polyphenols enhance the overall effect of antioxidants on the skin and body.
