Having flawless and ageless skin is the dream of most women, and that’s exactly why they turn to friends, glossy magazines, and the web for all sorts of advice. But here’s the reality: all the advice you’re getting could make you look older than you actually are. Yes ladies, we know it sounds like a nightmare, but it’s true!

Getting wrinkle-free, gorgeous skin is possible, but only if you follow some key steps. That’s why we’ve got Dr. Kiran Sethi, celebrity dermatologist from Isya Aesthetics, Delhi, to tell you all about the most common skincare mistakes that make you look older than you are!

1. Over cleansing your skin
Cleansing is an important part of your skincare routine, but if you do it too often, then you might end up damaging your skin’s lipid barrier, and that’s not good news. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser not more than twice a day to prevent looking older than you are.

“When your skin is super dry from excessive cleansing, lines become super prominent and makeup cracks. That’s why it is important to keep the skin moist,” she says.

2. Staring down at the phone
Haven’t we all been guilty of staring down at our smartphones for hours, without even realising how much damage it causes to your skin? And ladies, there’s a term for it too: it’s called tech neck. When you constantly look down at your phone or tablet, it causes horizontal lines on your neck, and many more signs of ageing.

“It also leads to early laugh lines, double chin, and early facial and neck sagging. Look at your phone straight to prevent this damage,” she says.

3. Staying dehydrated
We all know how important water is to keep your body happy and healthy. Same goes for your skin. Dehydration damages its elasticity, and makes your skin more prone to irritation and aging. As per research, healthy skin has anywhere between 10-20% water, and if you are dehydrated, these levels go down. That’s exactly why drinking 6-8 glasses of water is critical to hydrate your body.

4. Not wearing sunblock
“About 70% of the signs of ageing are from the sun, so make sure you wear your sunblock, whether winter or summer, indoors or outdoors,” she says.

In fact, several studies have gone on to show how using regular sunscreen can prevent several skins of ageing, including wrinkles or even loss of elasticity. So ladies, slather on your favourite sunscreen and look gorgeous as ever!

5. Missing out on your beauty sleep
We all know how important sleep is to rejuvenate the body, but it is equally important for your skin! When you cut down your sleep, it leads to increased stress, pale complexion, increased acne and dehydrated skin. All this put together makes you look older than you are!
