1. Less is more

If you want to do it the French way, then stick to this approach. As per Dr Sikka, French skincare is not as aggressive as the American or Korean skincare routines. French women like to embrace imperfections and keep their skin natural while taking care of their skin.

A typical French skincare routine is simple and minimalistic. They don’t overdo it and don’t modify it frequently. The French beauty routine accepts imperfections and prioritizes long-term outcomes over rapid delight, asserts Dr Debeshi.

2. CTM is the way!

For the unversed, CTM is a skincare routine that majorly involves three steps: cleanser, toner, and moisturizer in the universal order! While French women follow this age-old rule, they do it a bit differently. Dr Debeshi says what distinguishes them is the base formulation and the sort of product they usually like. Instead of harsh gel cleansers and trendy ‘acid toners,’ the French prefer mild and moisturising formulations. They pamper their skin as gently as a baby’s.”

Breaking down the steps for us, Dr Sikka highlights that French skincare is all about focusing on the long-term benefits instead of instant results. Here is a step-by-step guide to a typical French skincare routine:

Step 1: Micellar water to remove makeup

The tale is as old as time – remove makeup before focusing on your skincare! Both dermatologists recommend using micellar water to dissolve previously applied makeup or sunscreen. Dr Debeshi explains, “An authentic French skincare routine often includes the use of micellar water, a product containing purified water, gentle surfactants, and a variety of moisturisers such as glycerin. It acts as a gentle cleanser and easily removes everything from makeup to debris. It is also alcohol-free, which is very good for those with sensitive skin.”

Step 2: Milk-based cleanser

PERSONALISE NOW

Milk cleanser helps break down the tenacious filth particles, making it easier for the toner to remove them. A milk-based cleanser that is mild and good for people with dry or sensitive skin, recommends Dr Debeshi.

Step 3: Toner

After cleansing, comes the toner to soothe the skin. Dr Sikka recommends using toners that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or rose water. Following this, you can use day serums rich in vitamin C to address issues like dullness, age spots and pigmentation. It’s all about maintaining the skin barrier and hydrating the skin both internally and externally like the French, she adds.

Step 4: Moisturiser

“Day moisturisers are lighter than the night variants, so work well with makeup and also contain some amount of SPF. The night routine is similar to the daytime routine, only the serum changes to a night-specific one like retinol followed by a good hydrating night repair cream. The French belief of less is more holds true even with wearing makeup, they prefer an all-natural look for that as well,” explains Dr Sikka.

3. Face masks are a must

Face masks are incredibly thin sheets dipped in the goodness of serum and other skincare ingredients. They are a must in your routine if you want to follow the French skincare routine!

“A calming face mask is always included in the French approach to skincare. This product helps to eliminate numerous skin problems, remove excess oil from the skin, and rejuvenate the face. It is also wonderfully refreshing and will prepare your skin for the day,” avers Dr Debeshi. So, invest in some good face masks for bouncy and super-hydrated skin.

4. Don’t forget your sunscreen

Sunscreen is one single investment that goes a long way when it comes to skincare. It protects against harmful UV rays that can put your skin at risk of developing cancer. Dr Sikka says that sunscreen is a staple in a true French girl’s skincare routine! “Truly a girl’s best friend, it shields the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and ensures that the complexion remains even,” she recommends.

5. Beauty treatments

As much as we love to use natural ways to get that perfect, beautiful skin, beauty treatments also work. Dr Sikka states that French women love to invest in beauty treatments and go for in-clinic treatments once a month. “These may range from simple Medi facials to more complex treatments like vampire facials, injectable skin hydration boosters, etc. Also, the French approach to skin care is never complete without a relaxing face mask.”

Caution: Make sure you check with your dermatologist before incorporating any of these tips in your skincare routine.
