The appearance of lumpy and dimpled skin, known as cellulite, can be embarrassing for some women. Cellulite is nothing but the fat deposit under the skin and is a very common skin condition. And let’s face it, they don’t look great and it can make us super self conscious. But guess what, there are some essential oils for cellulite on which you can trust reducing its appearance.
“Cellulite is a very common condition that is aesthetically very unappealing. It is postulated that almost 80 percent of females post puberty have this condition at some point of time in their lives. It presents as a dimpling of the skin, or what we call an orange peel appearance of the skin. It is commonly seen in females on thighs, abdomen, arms, and sometimes calves; it presents a real challenge to treat it,” Dr Sonal Bansal, Consultant, Dermatology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute Gurugram, tells HealthShots.
“The exact cause is not known for cellulite,” says Dr Bansal. However, “weight gain, genetics issues, hormonal fluctuations, poor blood circulation, and ageing tend to play a role in cellulite,” she adds.
What’s the solution? Dr Bansal recommends certain essential oils that can help you get rid of cellulite naturally.
Lemon essential oil found to be helpful in reducing the appearance of cellulite. All thanks to its vitamin C content and blood circulation boosting properties. On one hand vitamin C, being a great antioxidant, eliminates dead skin layers free radicals and boosts the production of collagen. On the other hand, a good blood circulation helps in reduction of cellulite. Moreover, lemon oil is also an effective essential oil for hyperpigmentation and gives you an even skin tone.
Juniper berry oil has detoxifying diuretic properties which makes it a great way to decrease cellulite. Plus, it also helps in reducing water retention issues, toxic build and good for skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Mix 15-20 drops of juniper berry oil with 5 drops of olive oil and massage on the area of cellulite. Do it twice a week for better results.
Litsea cubeba oil is a citrusy and energising oil. It hosts a whole multitude of skin benefits because it has antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties. Use it twice a week.
Another essential oil is sweet fennel oil. It is a diuretic agent and has been used for years for reducing hormone based fluid retention. It works well when used topically. It is a safe oil and improve the appearance of cellulite impacted skin.
Last but not the least, cedar wood essential oil is one of the best essential oils that you can use for cellulite. Along with reducing the appearance of cellulite it can also fight excess weight and eliminate toxins from your body.
Dr Bansal said, “Essential oils like lemon, juniper berry, sage, litsea cubeba, sweet fennel, cedar wood are hypothesised to improve cellulite when massaged properly. But you should be careful before using them directly on your skin because you can get skin reactions from them. So, always do a patch test before you start to apply them.”

2. Available treatments are energy-based devices like radio frequency, lasers, and sometimes injections as well.
3. Topical creams have been found to have a positive effect on cellulite.
4. Maintain a healthy weight to avoid cellulite.
5. Retinol and to some extent caffeine are suggested to be the best among the lot.
