As your birthdays keep rolling in year after year, the skin also starts undergoing many changes. And not everyone can gracefully manage the changes in the skin caused by ageing. The two most important changes are the lessened collagen production and slow cell renewal. There are various factors such as lifestyle, diet, heredity, personal habits, and the environment you live in are responsible for the effect of ageing to show up on the skin. Since the skin does not heal the way it used to once upon a time, one should keep a special eye out for various age related skin problems because if ignored they can become serious and irreparable.

According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist, and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, you must not ignore skin problems caused by ageing.

Here are 5 age related skin problems, according to Dr Kapoor:

1. Growths on skin

These can be in the form of skin tags, warts, brown or discoloured patches on skin (seborrheic keratoses), or pink patches (actinic keratosis) and blemishes are common in older people and if not kept in check they have a chance of becoming skin cancer.

2. Wounds that don’t heal fast

As the skin loses its ability to repair as you age older and other problems like diabetes and cardiovascular issues, one might develop chronic wounds such as foot ulcers, venous, etc that can become uncomfortable and can cause constant pain.

3. Dry skin

It is the most common age related skin issue. Dry skin can lead to scratching, cracks, and bleeding infections. Dryness is often caused because the sebaceous glands start producing less oil to keep the skin moisturized.

4. Age spots or lentigos

Age spots or lentigos happen because the cells that contain the colour pigment become less. The skin starts looking paler, thinner, and liver spots start to appear especially in the sun-exposed areas.

5. Loose facial skin

Loss of elasticity of skin leads to loose skin around the eyes, cheeks, and jowls area which in turn makes the wrinkles and laugh lines more pronounced.

As you age, the skin is more prone or sensitive to temperature changes, and external factors such as touch, pressure, heat, etc. Damage to the skin can be easily avoided by taking basic skin care steps, wearing sunscreen, and keeping skin hydrated. Moreover, consult your dermatologist.
