It’s that time of the year again when the harsh sun can zap the life out of your skin and hair. While we all know about the damage sun’s UV rays can dole out to the skin (yes, we’re talking about tanning and pigmentation), not much is spoken about how it can leave your hair dry and dull.

But don’t worry! Now that you have made the correlation, here are home remedies that can help give your hair some TLC and restore its health and beauty. Presenting 10 DIY hair masks for the summer that your hair will thank you for:

1. Milk therapy to add body
Milk can easily be applied to the hair to nourish it and add body and shine. After shampoo, rinse your hair with milk and leave it on for 5 minutes. Then rinse off with plain water.

2. Nourishing egg mask for dry hair
Add an egg to a cup of milk and whisk it well. Rub the mixture onto your scalp and leave it on for five minutes. Rinse it with water. Do this twice a week.

3. Sesame oil and glycerin for brittle hair:
Take 1 tablespoons sesame seed (til) oil, one teaspoon pure glycerin, and one egg yolk. Mix all the ingredients together and apply it on the hair and ends. Leave it on for half an hour and then shampoo. Note: If you have longer hair, take more oil.

4. Hot oil treatment for conditioning
Twice a week, heat pure coconut oil and apply it on your hair and scalp. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the excess water, and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. Leave the hot oil treatment on overnight. Shampoo the next day.

5. Castor oil for better texture and colour
Mix 1 teaspoon castor oil with 1 tablespoon pure coconut oil. Heat and apply the mixture on your hair and scalp. Leave it on overnight. Castor oil helps to darken the hair which has become dull due to sun damage.

6. Almond oil for very dry and damaged hair
For extremely dry and damaged hair, mix a little almond oil with the yolk of an egg. Apply this on your hair. Tie an old scarf on your head and leave the mixture on for an hour. Then, shampoo using a mild product.

7. Avocado for nourishment
Avocado can be used in hair packs. The protein and oil contents of avocado nourish the hair, adding body and shine. Take one avocado and mash into a pulp. Add one tablespoon of brewed green tea and one tablespoon of fenugreek (methi) seed powder. Mix into a paste, adding lukewarm water. Apply and wash it off after half an hour.

8. DIY amla hair oil for dry scalp
Hair oil with amla helps to maintain the normal acid-alkaline balance of the scalp and thus prevent dandruff. To make amla hair oil, take a handful of dry amla. Grind coarsely and add it to 100 ml pure coconut oil. Keep it in an airtight glass bottle and keep the bottle in the sun daily for about 15 days. Then strain the oil and store.

9. Beer rinse for dry hair
Beer makes a good rinse for dry hair in summers and lends shine. After shampoo, add the juice of a lemon to the beer and rinse the hair. Wait for a few minutes and wash off with plain water.

10. Mayonnaise treatment to soften hair
Who would have though mayo would be in a list about DIY hair masks, right? Applying mayonnaise on the hair helps to nourish and soften it. It can be applied half an hour before shampooing as a pre-conditioner.
