I’ve spent my teenage years criticizing my mother’s extreme reliance on the weirdest home remedies for her skin and hair. But one particular remedy that haunted me for the longest time was when she would massage onion juice onto her scalp every week.

Those days would have been bearable if she would just stay inside the bathroom for the 30 minutes she allowed the juice to marinate on her head. But instead, she would move around the house pretending to be unperturbed by the horrific smell of onion juice and expected us to do the same.

Needless to say, we complied. But never once did I think that one fine day I would have to rely on this beauty hack for my hair.

Here’s how onion juice graced my scalp

In my early 20s, I contracted typhoid. If that wasn’t enough to take a toll on my system, work pressure and stress ensured that I suffered at the hand of severe hair loss.

So I did what any young woman living at home does, I gave in to my mom’s nauseating ways and reluctantly agreed to use onion juice on my scalp.

Preparing the juice is the easy part

My mom’s method was simple. She would simply peel and coarsely chop an onion and then throw it into the mixer-grinder. Next, she would run the pulp through a sieve to obtain the juice–et voila! Her smelly hair elixir was ready.

Applying it was slightly difficult

I followed my mom’s lead for this part and dove in hands first, minus any gloves. I liberally applied the juice on my scalp, not letting any crevice untouched. I left it on for half an hour and then washed my hair with a mild shampoo.

PERSONALISE NOW

I used this treatment twice a week diligently for a month, and the result? Well, my hair looked heavier, shinier, and healthier. Turns out, onion juice is also a good cure for dandruff and itchy scalp. So despite its strong odour, I couldn’t complain–well… not anymore.

Onion juice’s hair growth properties are also lauded by science

A study published in the Journal of Dermatology found that 74% of its participants experienced hair regrowth just after four weeks of applying onion juice on their scalp. The study attributed this to the presence of dietary sulfur in onions, which is known to boost collagen production i.e. produce healthy skin cells and hair growth.

In the end…

It may stink, but boy… onion juice can do wonders for your hair. However, if you’re trying this remedy at home, don’t forget to wash your hair thoroughly afterwards so as to avoid smelling like an onion even after bathing.
