The lockdown and social distancing due to the pandemic have ensured that our skin gets some time to relax and recuperate from all the damage caused by sunlight as well as pollutants. However, it doesn’t mean that we don’t need to follow a suitable skincare regimen anymore.

With working from home and limited social interactions, we may tend to get lax about our skincare routine. But, do you realize that getting to spend more time at home gives us an opportunity to try simple home remedies that work wonders for the skin? There are ingredients right there in your kitchen that can help in improving the skin’s overall health and appearance within a few days.

Here’s how to use some of the things present right at home for smooth skin:

1. Honey
Honey has natural antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that makes it a great ingredient for smooth skin. Raw honey can be used as a moisturising face mask to get soft, glowing and radiant skin. The presence of natural humectants can help in reducing dryness. Honey can also effectively heal acne and wounds, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

2. Aloe vera
What makes aloe vera one of the best ingredients for skincare is the fact that it is suitable for all skin types, be it dry, oily or sensitive. Aloe vera gel contains vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and amino acids that help in treating a variety of skin conditions such as sunburn, rash and redness. With its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera can help keep acne at bay.

3. Tomato
Tomatoes are full of nutrients that promote healthy skin. While vitamin C helps in building collagen and maintaining skin’s firmness, the presence of vitamin A fades dark spots and blemishes while smoothing out rough skin. Potassium and magnesium moisturize the skin and give it a youthful radiant glow.

4. Papaya
Papaya works really well as a home treatment to bring back the skin’s natural glow. Papain, an active enzyme that is naturally found in papaya, has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It works effectively in exfoliating dead skin, hydrating the skin and improving the skin tone.

5. Cucumber
Cucumbers contain plenty of skin-friendly vitamins and nutrients that makes it a great ingredient for treating skin issues such as dryness, ageing and inflammation. The antioxidants present in cucumber brighten the skin. They also help in increasing collagen production which equips the skin to defend itself against signs of premature ageing.

Here’s how these ingredients can be used effectively to maintain smooth skin.

1) Honey and tomato
To avoid the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, mix half a cup of tomato puree with 1 tablespoon of pure honey. Apply this to your face after cleaning. Leave it for 15 minutes and rinse off with cool water.

2) Papaya and honey
This one will help you treat dryness and keep your skin supple. Add 2 teaspoons of milk and 1 tablespoon of honey to half a cup of mashed papaya. Make a fine paste and apply it on the face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash off with cool water.

It will boost hydration and help you get radiant-looking skin. Blend an unpeeled cucumber and separate the juice. Add 2 tablespoons of pure aloe vera gel to the cucumber juice and blend into a smooth paste. Apply the mask to your face and massage gently. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

If you have persistent skin issues and home remedies are not working well enough, then it’s best to consult a dermatologist and get the required treatment that is best suited for your skin.
