Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, are visible, broken blood vessels that resemble purple, blue, or red branches or webs. They are visible on skin, mucous membranes, and anywhere on the body, including your face. Although spider veins are usually harmless, some people wish to get rid of them. If you wish to take the natural route, you can try some home remedies for spider veins.

To know more about the causes and home remedies, Health Shots asked with dermatologists Dr Shankar Sawant and Dr Kuna Ramdas for some advise.

What are the causes of spider veins?

“Generally, it looks red, blue, or purple. No investigation or radiological test is available to diagnose it. However, consulting a dermatologist can help as it’s a clinical condition,” says Dr Sawant.

They arise from weak vein valves, which would normally permit blood to pass through the veins. They are caused by swollen veins that are the result of damaged valves.

Here are some of the most common causes –

  • Ageing
  • Hereditary
  • Occupations that need a lot of endurance
  • Pills for contraception
  • Pregnancy
  • Tight attire
  • A higher BMI due to obesity
  • Blood clot history
  • Constipation

Home remedies to get rid of spider veins

They can even appear on the face. “They are known as facial telangiectasia, and can be a cosmetic concern for some people,” says Dr Ramdas. While complete elimination at home may not be possible, several remedies may help to reduce their appearance.

1. Witch hazel

Witch hazel is known for its astringent properties, which can help tighten and strengthen blood vessels. Apply witch hazel to the affected areas using a cotton ball. It may help to reduce redness and inflammation associated with the condition.

2. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera’s anti-inflammatory properties can be soothing for facial spider veins. Apply pure aloe vera gel to the affected areas and gently massage. Ensure that the gel is pure and does not contain additives that may irritate the skin.

3. Gentle facial massage

Massaging the affected areas with gentle, circular motions may improve blood circulation and reduce its appearance. Use a moisturiser or facial oil to prevent excessive friction on the skin.

4. Avoiding hot showers and steam

Hot water can dilate blood vessels, says Dr Ramdas. To prevent exacerbating facial spider veins, use lukewarm water for showers and avoid exposing your face to excessive heat, such as steam.

5. Dietary changes

Include foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, citrus fruits, and leafy greens, in your diet. Antioxidants may help to support overall skin health and reduce inflammation.

Dr Sawant says, “Usually, multiple treatments are required to treat the condition as per the diagnosis and condition. It can be treated through vascular laser therapy. Vascular laser therapy is a frequently utilised non-invasive treatment, specifically designed for addressing spider veins on the face.”

Vitamin K is thought to help strengthen blood vessels and may reduce the appearance of spider veins. Applying a cream or serum containing vitamin K to the affected areas could be beneficial. Ensure to follow product instructions for usage.

Sun exposure can worsen the appearance of spider veins. So, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your face from harmful UV rays. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also provide additional protection.
