Chapped lips, dry hair and cracked feet are just some of the problems that we face during winter. The chilly months can be pretty harsh on our skin and hair. The list of winter problems also includes dry scalp, which can get itchy and uncomfortable. Luckily, there are many home remedies to get rid of dry scalp. Let us tell you about the natural ingredients to treat dry scalp.
Dry scalp happens when your skin has too little moisture, says beauty industry veteran Dr Blossom Kochhar. You get dry scalp in exactly the same way you get dry skin on your face or other parts of the body. Winter is all about lack of moisture in the air, and that leads to drying up of the skin and scalp.
There are some common signs of dry scalp and those that differentiate them from dandruff.
• Flakes start shedding from the scalp though they are smaller in size as compared to dandruff
• Flakes associated with dry scalp are also dry and white in colour
• Persistent itchiness
• Loss of hair
If you want to take the natural route, try home remedies for dry scalp during winter. Here are some options:
Tea tree oil is known to be very effective in treating dry scalp because of its powerful antiseptic properties and anti-fungal effects, says the expert. To make a tea tree oil mask, mix a few drops with coconut or jojoba or olive oil, and massage it into the scalp. Let it sit on your scalp for at least 10 minutes before shampooing.
It is a great way to soothe dry and itchy scalp. Just mix castor oil with aloe vera gel and then apply it to your dry head. Let it stay there for at least 30 minutes then rinse it off after five minutes.
Aloe vera is a star ingredient in many beauty products due to its power to moisturise and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. Use it on your scalp as a single ingredient before shampooing. It will help to keep your scalp hydrated, helping in doing away with dry scalp.
To keep your scalp from drying, mix apple cider vinegar with water. Apply it directly on your scalp then rinse it off after five minutes.
Jojoba oil happens to be one of the best moisturisers for your scalp, and the best part is that you can use it right away without diluting it. Just work it into your scalp, let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes then take a shower.
Coconut oil is very helpful when it comes to dandruff and dry scalp, says Dr Kochhar. All you have to do is add a spoonful of it to your dry scalp and comb it over the ends. Let it stay for least 10 minutes then shampoo and use a hair conditioner in the end.
You can moisturise your skin and protect your scalp barrier by using moisturising hair masks once a week. All you need is one banana, honey, and one avocado which you need to mix. Apply the mask to your scalp then put on a shower cap and let the mask sit for 30 minutes before rinsing.
These natural ingredients can help in preserving the goodness of your scalp.
