Any variation from the natural colour of the lips, which are usually pink, is referred to as discoloured lips. The lips may turn darker or paler than your natural lip colour. Some people may naturally have dark lips due to genetic factors. Others might not have pink lips due to bad habits, including smoking. To get pink lips, you can try out home remedies for discoloured lips.

What causes discoloured lips?

There are a number of reasons why you might end up with discoloured lips, says cosmetologist and skin expert Dr Jatin Mittal.

• Lack of proper hydration can cause the lips to appear dry, cracked and pale.
• The chemicals in tobacco can lead to darkening of the lips over time.
• Overexposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun can result in pigmentation changes, making the lips darker.
Anemia, which is a condition characterised by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, can lead to paleness of the lips.
• Cyanosis, which occurs when there is insufficient oxygen in the blood, causing a bluish tint to the lips.
• Some allergic reactions to certain foods, medications or environmental factors can cause redness, swelling or changes in lip colour.
• Fungal or bacterial infections, such as candidiasis, can cause changes in lip colour and texture.
• Liver or kidney problems can sometimes manifest as changes in lip colour.

Natural ways to get rid of discoloured lips

While there is limited scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of natural ingredients in treating discoloured lips, some people may find these remedies helpful.

1. Lemon juice

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which may help to lighten dark lips, says the expert. Apply fresh lemon juice to your lips, leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse it off.

2. Rose water

Rose water is known for its hydrating and soothing properties. Apply rose water to your lips using a cotton ball, rinse it off after a few minutes.

3. Honey

Honey is known for being a natural humectant, and it helps to retain moisture. Apply honey to your lips and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off.

4. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is moisturising and may help to improve lip texture. Apply a small amount of coconut oil to your lips and let it sit there.

5. Cucumber

Cucumber has soothing and hydrating properties, so apply cucumber juice or thin slices of cucumber to your lips and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.

6. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera has healing and moisturising properties. Apply pure aloe vera gel to your lips then rinse it off after 15 to 20 minutes.

8. Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, says Dr Mittal. Mix turmeric powder with honey to create a paste. Apply it to your lips, leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse off.

9. Mint

Mint has a refreshing and cooling effect, and you can use it by crushing mint leaves. Apply the juice or leaves to your lips, leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off.

10. Almond oil

Almond oil is rich in vitamins and can help to moisturise and nourish lips. Apply a small amount of almond oil to your lips and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off. You can also mix the oil with honey for added benefits.

The speed at which you may see results from using these natural remedies for discoloured lips can vary widely. Individual responses depend on factors such as the cause of the discolouration, the severity of the condition, and how consistently and correctly the remedies are applied. Also, do a patch test to be sure you are not experiencing an adverse reaction before using any of these treatments.

If you don’t observe the desired changes or if the discolouration persists, consult a doctor.
