What is clove oil?

What are the benefits of clove oil for skin?

Using clove oil can be beneficial for your skin.

1. Clove oil gives relief from dryness and itch

Some of the skin conditions can leave pir skin dry and itchy. Clove oil may help in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, a condition that causes dry, itchy skin, according to a 2023 study published in the Beni-Suef University Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences.

2. May treat acne

Due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, clove oil helps kill acne-causing bacteria, says Dr Kochhar. This essential oil contains eugenol, a compound that helps in treating acne.

3. May reduce wrinkles

Clove oil helps reduce skin sagging and wrinkles. Regular application of this essential oil increases blood circulation which is important for healthy skin. If your blood does not circulate well, the transportation of nutrients into your skin cells will be less efficient. This can adversely affect collagen production, which is needed to prevent the appearance of wrinkles.

4. May fade dark spots

Clove oil helps in fading dark spots and blemishes left behind by acne, says the expert. Its exfoliating properties help in removing dead skin cells and ensuring an even skin tone.

5. May relieve skin irritation

Clove oil has analgesic properties, which help relieve pain or discomfort. When applied topically, it may provide relief from minor skin irritations, insect bites, or stings.

6. May prevent premature ageing

Clove oil, being rich in antioxidants, can help neutralise free radicals. Free radicals can contribute to premature ageing and damage to the skin cells. The antioxidant properties of clove oil may aid in protecting the skin from oxidative stress.

  • Take a cotton pad and pour a few drops of clove oil on it. Apply a light layer to your face, or mix the oil with serum for a radiant glow.
  • Take a few drops of clove essential oil and mix it with a carrier oil like almond or coconut oil. Massage it on your face properly using circular motions to ensure proper blood circulation.

The frequency with which clove oil can be used on the skin depends on a variety of factors, including skin sensitivity, the purpose of use, and the concentration of clove oil in the product, says the expert. Also, the dilution ratio should be about 1 to 2 drops of clove oil per tablespoon of carrier oil. This helps reduce the risk of skin irritation.
