Collagen-based skincare products have been available in the market since forever. But recently, there has been a surge in celebrities promoting collagen supplements which can be consumed orally. The claim? It will reduce wrinkles and any other signs of skin ageing.

Now, we all strive for smooth and glowing skin. No wonder so many people follow carefully crafted skincare routines each single day. The aim is to keep wrinkles at bay and prevent the ageing of skin. Nonetheless, adding any sort of supplement to our diet requires careful consideration. If not consumed safely, it can actually harm the body.

So, HealthShots decided to ask an expert if eating collagen supplements can do anything to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on our skin.

In our conversation with Anshu Chaturvedi, Head Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, we understood the effects of collagen on the skin and if we really need to consume any supplements.

What happens to our skin if there’s a lack of collagen?

“Collagen is basically a type of protein. It can be defined as a protein tissue. Its basic function is rebuilding the structure of our skin. As we age, the collagen tissues in our body get diminished. With this reduction in collagen, our skin will start becoming dull and dry. The problem becomes exacerbated by the fact that our body also loses its ability to produce collagen as we age,” explained Chaturvedi.

Can eating a collagen supplement reduce wrinkles?

According to Chaturvedi, “Collagen supplements are really beneficial for our skin health. From wrinkles to dryness, research shows it can help resolve multiple dermal health issues. Taking a supplement can combat the effect of ageing and ensure that our skin is able to maintain its health. So, consuming collagen in its supplement form does have a positive impact on the skin.”

What about the amount of collagen supplement to be consumed?

While consuming collagen supplements can be beneficial, one must be careful about how much of it they’re consuming. Chaturvedi said, “Collagen supplements come in different doses which are measured in grams. Usually, the dosage starts from 2 grams per day. The recommended dose in most cases is between 2 to 5 grams.”

When can one see the results?

“It does take time to see the results. So, you must consume it regularly for at least a month and a half to start seeing its benefits. Only after using it for a couple of months will you notice that your skin isn’t as dry as it used to be and the appearance of fine lines has reduced,” informed Chaturvedi.

Is it important to speak to a professional before adding a collagen supplement to the diet?

Chaturvedi said, “You should go to a doctor or a qualified dietician to understand if you need a collagen supplement and what the dosage should be. They’ll be able to provide you with a prescription accordingly. The advice of an expert must be followed when consuming a collagen supplement. Everyone’s collagen requirements are different and unique.”

According to the expert, taking a dose higher than what you need can cause more harm than good. In addition, it may be harmful to your health if you’re already suffering from a prior medical condition and may not react well with medicines you might be taking. So, it isn’t advisable to give in to celebrity trends and start consuming collagen.

So, ladies, eating a collagen supplement to combat wrinkles can be a good idea but must be done only after consulting a professional!
