Potato is a go-to vegetable for so many of us! From fries to aloo ka paratha, potato definitely is the star ingredient of some of the most loved dishes. What you may not have known is that it can do wonders for your skin too!
It may sound bizarre but the humble aloo can actually help reduce dark spots, remove tan, lighten the appearance of dark circles and add a healthy glow to your face. This is because potatoes are extremely rich in vitamin C which is known to heal sun damage, remove dead skin cells, and diminish fine lines. What’s more, potatoes also contain an enzyme called catecholase which can help you deal with hyperpigmentation.
Make potato a part of your skincare routine in these 4 simple ways:
1. Face mask for bright and youthful skin
A potato-based face mask will not only brighten your skin due to the presence of vitamin C but the antioxidants present in potatoes will save you from premature ageing. Grate half a potato and mix it with 1 tablespoon of gram flour (besan) and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this mask to your face for 15 minutes before removing it with lukewarm water. In fact, the gram flour and lemon will only enhance the effects of potato!
2. Face scrub for exfoliation
Potatoes are very mildly acidic and hence, can effectively but gently remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Add half a grated potato to half a teaspoon of oatmeal and half a teaspoon of milk. Oatmeal is a gentle exfoliator and will enhance the effects of potato. Scrub your face gently with this mix for 8 to 10 minutes before washing it. Milk contains lactic acid which will also strengthen the exfoliating effects of this face scrub while the fatty acids in it will ensure your skin stays moisturised to counter the drying effect of exfoliation.
3. Ointment for acne scars and hyperpigmentation
Potato contains catecholase, a brightening enzyme, that can lighten acne scars and hypertension. So, you can make your very own potato-based ointment right at home! Take half a teaspoon of potato juice and mix it with a quarter teaspoon of tomato juice and half a teaspoon of honey. Apply this ointment to the affected areas for 20 to 30 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water. Apply this to your skin at least once a week to see results. All three ingredients are known to work on reducing the appearance of scars and hyperpigmentation.
4. Under eye mask for dark circles
Dark circles can make you look tired but thankfully, you can fix this issue right at home with potatoes. Once again, the lightning properties of potatoes come into play. On two slices of potatoes apply aloe vera. Place these on each eye for 20 minutes before taking off the slices and washing your eyes. On one hand, the potatoes will lighten your dark circles and on the other hand, aloe vera will soothe puffiness. Try out this remedy every alternate day for a fresh look.
So, ladies, add this vegetable to your skincare routine for healthy skin!
