Honey is the perfect natural sweetener—you can add it to desserts or beverages, without worrying about your health. A viscous substance made by honey bees, honey is truly a gift from mother nature. Turns out, it doesn’t just have health benefits, but can also be extremely great for your dermal health!

An integral part of skin-related home remedies, honey has been used since time immemorial for its powerful properties. In fact, according to research published in the Central Asian Journal of Global Health, honey has antimicrobial properties which can help you reduce acne and skin infections. What’s more, the same research notes that honey can prove to be effective in the healing of wounds and providing relief to irritated skin. Honey is also a boon for dry skin, because not only is it naturally moisturising but it is also a humectant. This means it has the unique quality of locking in moisture into the skin. Needless to say, honey should definitely be a part of your skincare routine!

Here are three ways to add honey to your beauty routine for healthy and hydrated skin:

1. Face mask

Add a teaspoon of honey to one teaspoon of rose water, and one tablespoon of multani mitti. Mix these ingredients together, till you get a paste-like consistency. Apply this mask to your face and neck. Wait for it to dry completely before washing it with warm water. It shouldn’t take more than 15 to 20 minutes but the results will be amazing!

Multani mitti not only soothes the skin but also cleans the pores, clearing your skin of dead skin cells and impurities that can cause breakouts and blackheads. It also helps control excess oil production. Rose water soothes irritated skin, while honey leaves the skin moisturised.

2. Scrub

Add two teaspoons of honey to one teaspoon ground coffee, and half a teaspoon of turmeric. Mix these ingredients together and scrub your face with it for three to five minutes. Target areas like the cheeks, nose and forehand. Do keep in mind that you should scrub your skin very gently, or it could cause irritation.

Ground coffee is granulated and makes for a good scrub to exfoliate the skin. In addition, coffee has antioxidants that can help to fight the action of free radicals that cause skin damage. Turmeric has powerful antibacterial properties, which can help you avoid acne and keep your skin clear. What’s more, it also provides your skin with a natural glow! The honey will prove to balance out the drying effect of exfoliation, and help your skin stay hydrated.

3. Moisturising massage oil

If you want to indulge in a facial cleansing spa right at home, add half a teaspoon of honey to one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix the two ingredients together and apply it to your face. Massage your skin for 15 to 20 minutes with this mix, before washing it off with warm water.

Olive oil is deeply hydrating and has been used since time immemorial to keep the skin moisturised, in order to avoid conditions like dry, dull and irritated skin. Honey is a humectant, and helps to lock the moisturise into your skin.
