A crappy day in office, pollution, oily skin, fried food–everything we eat and do shows up on our skin. While some things can be avoided (I am looking at you samosa!), others not so much. Delhi’s air quality is hard to escape after all.

Let’s get real–we aren’t Cinderellas and there are no fairy godmothers ready with their magic wands to transform our skin. That said, there is a kitchen basic can actually cast a magic spell on dull and blemished skin.

Wondering what this magical ingredient is? Well, we’re talking about lemons.

Here’s why lemon peels are skin saviours

A 2017 July study published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology noted that vitamin C (which, by the way, lemons are loaded with) is the most powerful skin antioxidant. The paper claims that topical vitamin C offers powerful protection from sun damage, pigmentation, and ageing.

The best part? You don’t even need lemon juice to get the job done–lemon peels are enough. So the next time you squeeze some, don’t throw the peels away. Instead, use them for a glow-up.

But first…

Let’s make some lemon peel powder
Dry lemon skins under the sun for two days or until they dry completely. Next, churn them in a mixture to make a fine powder. Yes, it’s simple.

Now, let’s get masking. Here are three recipes that your skin will thank you for

DIY lemon peel masque to reduce tanning
Beach vacations are great, but the resultant tanning? Not so much. But hey, when life gives you lemons, get masking!

What you need:

1 tbsp lemon peel powder
1 tbsp besan
Milk as required

Mix all ingredients until well combined. Apply it on your face and keep it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Splash some water to soften the masque and gently scrub the tan off. Rinse with water and say toodles to your tan.

A word of caution
If you have very rash-prone, dry, or sensitive skin, then lemon probably isn’t the best ingredient to experiment with. Moreover, don’t keep the masque for longer than 20 minutes to avoid over-drying and fine lines.

So, what are you waiting for? Get masking! And yes, do let us know how these masques worked for you. Just drop a line in the comments below. Until next time!
