Scalp care is always associated with those nourishing warm oil massages that most of us do at least once or twice a month. However, scalp care beyond oiling is unheard of until recent times when it has become vital. To say the least, taking care of your scalp is as important as taking care of your skin.

Why should you take care of your scalp?

Dr Kiran Sethi, renowned skin and wellness doctor, in her latest Instagram post, revealed that since scalp skin is some of the thickest skin of our body, it is utmost important to take care of it externally. Dandruff, folliculitis (bumps), dry skin, rashes on the scalp, and hair fall can all result if you maintain poor scalp care.

In fact, it is rather interesting to see the increase in the rise of scalp care with various other methods other than oiling alone. “We have physical scalp scrubs, chemical exfoliators, scalp scrub and massaging tools, scalp salts, and masks for different types of scalp concerns. Scalp care undoubtedly is the new skin care with a whole lot of products designed for it,” Dr Sethi says in her post.

Ways to take care of your scalp

Always remember that the health of your scalp will determine the health of your hair. An unhealthy scalp can lead to a host of problems, including premature hair loss as the hair follicles weaken.

However, with new scalp scrubs, scalp treatment serums to reduce oil secretion and treat dandruff, hair screens for preventing UV damage and scalp masks for dry skin available, we tell you simple way to take care of the skin on your scalp:

1. Use gentle hair care products

Do not use products that contain sulphates, alcohols, or fragrances as they can strip away the natural oils in your hair and remove dead skin cells, making your scalp skin dry and prone to irritation.

2. Shampoo gently

Do not use shampoo harshly on your scalp. Instead, massage it so that it ends up increasing blood circulation and leads to no abrasions on the scalp.

3. Wash your hair less often

We all think that we should wash hair more often. However, people with dry or itchy scalp should increase the time between washes to balance out the oil production.

4. Eat more antioxidants

Lesser antioxidants in your diet can lead to more oxidative stress, which in turn, happens when the number of damaging free radicals in the body are higher than the beneficial antioxidants. So eating more antioxidants means you are less prone to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, apart from an unhealthy scalp.

5. Use a scalp scrub

Just like you scrub your face on regular intervals, it is important to use a scalp scrub to exfoliate the skin on your head. As they contain physical or chemical exfoliants, scalp scrubs can help remove excess skin cells, oil, and dandruff.
