Using multani mitti on my hair helped treat my oily scalp and gave me voluminous hairPublished on: 29 June 2020, 16:35 pm IST
If you happen to possess an oily scalp just like mine, you know those dramatic advertisements showing a poor girl walking around with limp, oily hair, and utter disappointment on the face after washing it the previous day are actually a part of your reality.
There are many who will admire us for regularly oiling our hair to keep them moisturized without realizing that oily hair is not a result of an oil-application or self-care. It’s basically just a terribly oily scalp.
Now, dry shampoo can be a saviour when you’re just not in the mood to wash your hair. However, the hair-volumizing effect it has to offer comes at a steep price of subjecting your scalp and hair to harmful chemicals. I realised this the hard way, one that involved excessive hair fall and eventually, hair-thinning. You, however, can take a cue from my blunder and spare yourself the horror of this torture by taking the natural route to combat oily-hair problems just like I did.
Multani mitti to the rescue!
Believe it or not, applying a paste of powdered multani mitti on my scalp as well as hair for 20 minutes, and washing it off with water followed by a shampoo wash really helped me soothe my oily scalp.
Surely, it was a slightly messy affair but totally worth the time and effort because:
A) It increased the number of my good-hair days and has super-quick results
B) It really got me off my habit and the sheer necessity of using a dry shampoo regularly
C) I had to make time for it only twice a week
D) It had no side-effects
Still don’t believe me? There’s solid scientific proof of its many benefits. Take a look:
1. It can absorb the oil off your scalp like magic
There’s a reason why multani mitti is widely used and counted upon in skincare products for oily skin types. Fuller’s earth is excellent when it comes to absorbing oil, a property that is noted even by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
They further go on to explain that the super-absorbent nature of aluminum silicate, the main mineral present in multani mitti is what helps it remove excess oil from the skin. This is why it works like a charm when it comes to battling oily hair and scalp.
2. It purifies your scalp
Multani mitti works as a decontamination agent and purifies the scalp by removing any toxins or chemicals that your hair might have been exposed to, says a study conducted in 2015. Obviously, a clean scalp means less oil and more bounce in the hair!
3. It can make those overactive oil glands stop
The study also mentions how multani mitti can hold a high content of water. This means that it can really hydrate your scalp. Basically, what happens is that when your skin is dehydrated, it tends to secrete and hold on to more oil as a defence mechanism. However, using multani mitti can restore the scalp’s hydration and prevent oil secretion.
4. It literally heals your scalp
Multani mitti has anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, if your scalp has a dandruff problem or has any bacterial growth, applying multani mitti on it can really help you get rid of both these issues. Its exfoliant nature can further help you get rid of the dirt and dust build-up on your scalp that can prevent it from breathing, making it more oily.
So, it worked like a charm on my oily scalp and if you face the same problem, I would totally recommend going the natural way with multani mitti instead of depending on products with chemicals.
