Let’s be honest: whenever we think of using henna for hair, we are appalled by the bright orange shade that we see gracing the heads of many an Indian uncles and aunties. And if that doesn’t put us off, then the strong smell of mehendi surely does the job.

But here’s the thing—even though henna or mehendi is considered an old-school way of colouring your hair, this plant has the power to throughly condition your mane. Not just that, if you have a greasy scalp, henna can balance your sebum glands, urging them to produce less oil. Last, but not the least, using henna for hair can also help you deal with boils on your scalp as well as dandruff—thanks to its antimicrobial properties.

But what about the dirty orange colour, you ask? Well, if you’ve got dark hair with little to no greys, then you’ve got nothing to worry about. While henna is excellent for covering white hair, it merely lends a tint to brown or black tresses. That said, if those pesky greys have made a home on your head—then we’ve got a recipe for you that will give you all the benefits henna has to offer minus the shocking orange transformation.

Henna — the herbal and organic way to dye your hair.

Presenting: the ultimate henna conditioning hair pack
Made of all things natural, this hair pack has hair-friendly ingredients like curry leaves, methi seeds, and mustard oil—along with henna—to boost hair growth, remove all traces of frizz, and make your hair soft and shiny.

This is what you’ll need:

100 to 150 gm pure henna powder (depending on the length of your hair)
8 to 10 curry leaves
2 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds
1 tbsp amla powder
1 tbsp mustard oil

Preparation:

1. In a saucepan, boil a litre of water. Once it comes to a boil, throw in the curry leaves and methi seeds. Let this mixture brew, until the fenugreek seeds don’t lose their colour.

2. Strain the mixture and reserve the water. Now add the amla and henna powders. Mix well, until all the ingredients are combined. Now add the mustard oil and let the mixture sit for at least two hours before using.

Note: If the mixture becomes too thick to use, you can add more mustard oil to achieve a thinner consistency.

How to use:
Part your hair, making small sections. Wear gloves and using your hands, coat each of these sections (from root to ends) liberally with the henna hair pack. Tie your hair up in a bun and wear a plastic shower cap. Alternatively, you can also use a poly bag. This will ensure that the henna pack doesn’t completely dry out and is easy to rinse off.

Let the pack sit in your hair for 45 minutes to an hour, before washing it off with a gentle shampoo. Condition as usual—and you’re done!

You see, amla powder can slow down greying of hair and prevent dandruff, while curry leaves boosts hair growth and reduces damage. Methi seeds keep hair fall and thinning in check as mustard oil strengthens the strands.

With the power of these ingredients combined, you not only get strong and shiny hair—but also better hair growth and less hair fall. Oh, and as far as the ghastly orange shade is concerned, since you’re going to shampoo within an hour’s time in any case, you’re not giving mehendi enough time to add pigment to your hair.

So boys and girls, trust in the power that henna has to offer your hair—and try this recipe.
