Hair transplants or hair restoration procedures have been on the rise globally. Since the last few years, trichologists around the world have reported a sharp increase in hair transplant procedures and are getting more inquiries than before.

In the last couple of years, India has emerged as the global destination for hair transplants. The increase in hair transplant surgeries is primarily due to the rise in the number of people who suffer from baldness. In addition, growing interest in self-care procedures has further pushed the numbers. The development of minimally invasive and painless hair transplant techniques such as Direct Hair Transplant (DHT) has encouraged people to go for treatment.

However, here are a few things you need to consider before deciding on hair restoration. There is also a list of preoperative precautions you need to take.

To clear out the air around hair transplant procedures, HealthShots spoke to Dr Pradeep Sethi, Hair expert and Hair Restoration Surgeon.

“The most advanced procedure nowadays is DHT. It allows more control of depth, angle, and direction of the implanted hair, resulting in a completely natural hairline that takes customer satisfaction to new heights. It has now become the procedure of choice for flawless hair transplants. One should consider a clinic that offers and practices this technology,” says Sethi, who is also the Co Founder at Eugenix Hair Sciences.

Steps to consider before considering a hair transplant treatment:

1. Deciding the hair restoration clinic

There are a number of hair restoration clinics and deciding which one to pick can make all the difference. You need to know which clinic uses the most advanced technology and latest procedures, along with a history of cases handled and their outcomes. To pick one considering these factors will keep all your anxieties about hair transplants at bay.

2. Doctor’s credentials and experience

The experience and skills of your surgeon plays a crucial role in the success of any surgical procedure, and hair transplant surgery is no exception. Experience matters and it has a direct correlation with the quality of hair transplant. Find out how long your hair expert has been doing hair restorations and his credentials.

3. Patient reviews and testimonials

This one’s a no-brainer! You need to check the before and after pictures of patients already treated by the hair transplant surgeon. For this, you can check unbiased reviews on social media platforms or hair forums. Hair forums can provide you with honest reviews, and you can read the first-hand experiences of patients and can also connect with them for more direct feedback.

4. Cost and success rates of hair transplant

Hair transplant is a once-in-a-lifetime procedure, and one should not skimp on money, only to find themselves looking for a corrective hair transplant surgery later. To ensure that a hair transplant lasts a lifetime, ask for the success rates of the surgeon’s past surgeries.

Here are some pre-operative precautions you should take before a hair transplant procedure:

1. Disclose your medications

Inform your doctor about any medications that you might be consuming to know if you need to stop them before your procedure. Avoid consuming multivitamins about a month prior to the surgery. A week before the procedure, avoid taking aspirin and other pain killers.

2. Detox

Avoid alcohol and smoking at least a week prior to surgery. Smoking reduces the oxygenation of the blood and increases the blood flow in the scalp leading to additional blood loss during the surgery. Also, smoking, in general, is not conducive to the cellular health of all tissues of the body. So, it is recommended to reduce it, if not completely stop before hair transplant surgery.

3. Stop using some hair products

Avoid using hair oil. Oiling can cause dust and other pollutants to clog pores on the scalp. However, regularly wash your hair to keep it clean. Avoid using products with harsh chemicals such as a hair color.

4. Get blood markers checked

Although hair transplant procedures are minimally invasive, a more responsible clinic would advise you to get certain blood markers checked in order to avoid any complications or emergencies during the surgery. These tests can range from a simple blood pressure check to your prothrombin time and random glucose levels.

5. Relax

Avoid strenuous activities a day before the procedure and get adequate rest. Don’t stress about the procedure and leave the rest to the doctors.
