In the last few years, flaxseed has assumed the reputation of a superstar. After all, there’s nothing that it can’t do! From aiding weight loss to playing a part in beauty, flaxseed truly proves the magic of nature. Here’s a surprise: flaxseed can also work wonders for your tresses.

It’s true, ladies! The benefits of flaxseeds for hair are downright amazing! There are several ways in which you can use flaxseed for your hair, whether it is in the form of an oil, or ingesting the seeds the good old way. As of now, there’s limited research around the benefits of flaxseed for the tresses, but there’s no denying that it is loaded with goodness.

Before we get down to the details about flaxseed for hair, let’s try to understand what flaxseed is. It’s golden-brown in colour and is a powerhouse of several essential macro and micronutrients, ranging from protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and fibre to antioxidants.

Although it is nutrient-rich, whole flaxseed is not easily absorbed by the body. Hence, it is ground into a powder form or cold-pressed to extract oil for cooking purposes.

Here’s how you can use flaxseed for your hair

When you apply flaxseed oil to your hair, it helps to seal the cuticle and reduces frizziness. What’s more, it contains omega-3 fatty acid, which is also found in fish, but it is present in a different form called alpha-linolenic acid in the flaxseed. This form is believed to reduce inflammation in the body, and can affect hair growth.

Flaxseed also has B vitamins which are known to strengthen your hair follicle and help with faster hair growth. In addition, it also contains vitamin E which reduces the effect of free radicals on your scalp, helping with faster hair growth.

Tips to maximise the benefits of flaxseeds for hair

Here are some ways in which you can make flaxseed a part of your hair care routine:

  • You can apply flaxseed hair oil to your roots and scalp to reap its benefits.
  • You could also use flaxseed as a hair mask! Just pour a small amount of the oil into your hands, and massage it into your scalp using gentle motions. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse it using water, and shampoo.
  • You can use it before conditioning your hair, which means right after you shampoo your hair.

  • Another way is to make a flaxseed gel for hair at home. Instead of rinsing it out of your hair, the gel stays in your hair until you shampoo your hair next. You can also add flaxseed to your diet by using it in cereals, smoothies or even salads.

All in all, flaxseed is a powerhouse of nutrients and is most likely to benefit your health. If your body functions well, your hair will shine!
