It is not uncommon for so many of us to want shine, volume, and good health for our hair. While there are a wide variety of products and techniques available, keratin treatment and rebonding remain the top contenders for getting smooth and lustrous hair.

These treatments are meant for managing frizzy hair and aid styling. However, both of them differ in their nature and effects.

This is how keratin treatment differs from rebonding

1. Keratin: Keratin treatment rejuvenates the natural protein in your hair strands that are subjected to wear and tear due environmental and lifestyle factors. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein found in epithelial cells on the surface of the skin. As per a research published by Journal of Anatomy, keratin is responsible for the growth and structure of the hair, and provides support and a barrier of protection to the hair. This protein can be found in flowers such as hibiscus, making it an important ingredient for home-based remedies as well.

During this treatment, keratin is artificially applied on the hair using masks and topical products, making it smooth and frizz free. The porous hair roots absorb the keratin, helping the hair rebuild, grow strong, and revitalised with protein.

2. Rebonding: This treatment chemically alters the structure of your hair, making it shiny and straight. Heat and chemicals are used during this process to style the hair, wherein natural bonds in your hair shafts are broken and rearranged to form new bonds. As per a research published by International Journal of Trichology, rebonding breaks the natural cell structure of your hair to restructure it.

Here’s how keratin treatment and rebonding will affect your hair

1. Keratin: This treatment helps in managing frizzy hair, and gives smooth and shiny tresses. As the hair is naturally rich in keratin, applying it in the form of a treatment will help replenish the hair of the natural proteins, making them straight and easy to manage. However, this treatment may require you to invest in products and get touch ups periodically.

2. Rebonding: For silky and straight hair, rebonding is a tried and tested treatment option. It makes the hair frizz free, and adds to the aesthetic value, making it look appealing and lustrous. However, the chemical component of this treatment may not be suitable for damaged hair, and regular rebonding may further weaken the hair strands.

While rebonding lasts longer than keratin treatment, the latter may also be used as a home remedy. When deciding which treatment to choose from, it will come down to your hair type and requirements.

So ladies, consult an expert and make an informed decision on choosing the treatment that suits you best!
