If you are looking for that one ingredient that can transform your hair then try washing your mane with apple cider vinegar or ACV. From weight loss to beautiful skin, if there weren’t enough reasons for you to stock up on ACV, then here’s another one: apple cider vinegar for hair is godsent.

Apple cider vinegar rinses are really magical and can leave your hair shiny and luscious. Don’t believe us? Then hear it from Dr Kiran Sethi, a widely renowned skin and cosmetic specialist from Delhi, who is here to enlighten us on how apple cider vinegar can solve all your hair and scalp woes.

But first Dr Sethi would like you to know that you must always choose raw and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar which has enzymes, probiotics, pectin, vitamins b1, b6, biotin, b5, niacin folic acid and other trace minerals like sodium, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, iron, and magnesium in it. “It is made from fermented apple juice, so now you can just imagine how beneficial it is,” she explains.

Now let’s get down to the benefits of apple cider vinegar for hair:

1. Controls your frizz
Dr Sethi points out, “The primary component of apple cider vinegar is acetic acid which gives it the acidic pH levels. The acidic rinses help in sealing the cuticles of frizzy or damaged hair leaving it shinier and healthier.”

2. Gives you a healthier scalp
“The alpha-hydroxy acid in apple cider vinegar stimulates the cell turnover revealing healthier scalp,” explains Dr Sethi. Also, the natural anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar can soothe any scalp irritation.

3. Treats dandruff
Apple cider vinegar has acetic acid which is reported to have an antimicrobial effect which makes it pretty effective for preventing dandruff. So, if you’re tired of that dandruff calling your scalp home, then you might want to give ACV a try.

4. Helps clarify scalp buildup
Dr Sethi suggests ACV for people who get product buildup or hard water buildup on the scalp and hair. The clarifying power of apple cider vinegar is tremendous and the alpha-hydroxy acid content makes it a natural exfoliator. Another Plus point? Unlike clarifying shampooes, ACV does its job without stripping away the moisture from your hair.

But how can you use apple cider vinegar for hair?
Dr Sethi suggests ACV for people with an oily scalp, frizzy, and porous hair. She also recommends using diluted apple cider vinegar. “Skin and scalp ph is between 4.5 to 5.5. So you need to dilute apple cider vinegar to maintain this pH balance.”

You can rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar up to three times a week. But please ensure that rinse off the apple cider vinegar solution with within five minutes. Not rinsing the excess ACV can damage your hair in the long run.
