The monsoons often make it difficult to manage frizzy hair. The wet weather and moisture-laden air makes the frizz worse, leading to unmanageable hair. This happens because our dry hair absorbs the moisture from its surroundings, and as a result swells up, and looks frizzy.
However, the right products along with the right hair care tips and tricks can ensure that your hair remains frizz-free this monsoon. Read on to know how you can banish that monsoon frizz once and for all.
Frizzy hair is very common in monsoon and that’s because of humidity. Frizz is a sign of dry and damaged hair. In the monsoon, the air is moist which dampens our hair and makes them frizzy and unmanageable. “This wetness leads to more dryness in your locks, making this problem even worse,” explains dermatologist Dr Rinky Kapoor.
You need to be diligent with hair care round the year because just putting an extra effort now is not going to make much of a difference. That said, these seven tips by Dr Kapoor help you out this season:
It looks oh-so-fun in movies but in reality, getting wet in the rain can mess up your hair. “When your hair gets wet, it tends to become drier and lose moisture. Also, if you get wet in rain then there are high chances of a scalp infection, which can further damage your hair”, says Dr Kapoor.
The more you wash your hair, the more damage you’ll cause–which by the way can leave the room open for frizz. “Washing your hair twice a week is enough. This way you can also keep the frizz level in check,” suggests Dr Kapoor. Overcleaning of the scalp can lead to surface damage, stated this study, published in Skin Appendage Disorders.
Oiling your hair again and again may clog the pores of your scalp. Plus, as many times you’ll oil your hair, you will wash them too. The result? Frizz!
If you have frizzy hair, a conditioner will keep the dryness away and keep your mane moist for longer. “You can also apply hair serum to tame your frizz,” Kapoor suggests. A study, published in the International Journal of Trichology, suggests that a conditioner helps to minimize the frizz, and neutralizes negative charge which causes friction in hair cuticles.
Frizzy hair needs constant damage protection and what can be better than using a home-made hair mask? “Just take egg whites and mix them with curd. Apply it for 30 minutes and rinse it. This is the best pre-conditioner that you can ever use for your hair. But don’t use the yolk as it can dry your hair further,” Dr Kapoor recommends. A study, published in the Avicenna Journal of Medical Biotechnology, states that banana is a good ingredient to make a hair mask to control frizz.
Home-made masks are the best thing for your hair, especially when you compare them with creams and gels that are laden with chemicals. These chemicals not just damage your hair but worsen the frizz,” she says.
Blow-drying and ironing your hair will suck out the moisture making your baby hairs stand tall like a tower on your head. “Let them dry naturally”, suggests Dr Kapoor. A study, published in Annals of Dermatology, suggests that if you need to use a hair dryer, make sure to keep it at a distance of 15 cm from your scalp, and move it constantly.
There are a few products that can make sure your hair continue to remain frizz-free after a wash. Using a hair serum can be a great option to protect your tresses from the humidity. Besides this, a leave-in conditioner can also go a long way in locking in the moisture and making your hair soft. Make sure to also avoid very harsh shampoos, especially ones containing alcohol. Styling tools should also be avoided as they use heat which can make your hair dry. Oils such as coconut oil and argan oil can also be applied to make hair frizz-free.
It is very common for hair to get frizzy during the monsoons. However, making sure to use the right products can help you. Avoid letting your hair get wet in the rain, make sure to not wash or oil your hair every day, and not using too many chemicals might do the trick.
