Healthy hair is often looked at as a far-fetched dream. To add to the hair woes, the winter season unleashes its wrath upon your already suffering mane. Hair problems like dryness, frizz, and breakage occur due to unhealthy lifestyles and chemical treatments. Frequent colouring of your hair may also add up to the distress.

Yes, it is true that some hair types are more prone to frizz and drying out. But, it ain’t something that effective hair care remedies won’t tackle. While following up your hair with a hair conditioner post a shampoo is always a good practice, it is often not enough.

Enter deep conditioning! A deep conditioning method at home is one of the best ways to put an end to your hair problems and boost hair growth. This method could treat your hair with 4 natural ingredients that can be easily found in your kitchen.

Nivedita Dadu, Renowned Dermatologist, Founder and Chairman of Dr Nivedita Dadu Dermatology Clinic, spoke to HealthShots about the goodness and nutritional benefits of all the ingredients used in this DIY deep conditioner.

“These 4 ingredients in this deep conditioner can give a glossy sheen and healthy texture to the hair. They can impart shine to hair and give it a smooth, soft touch. This deep conditioning method can also prevent damage, strengthen hair and reduce breakage of hair strands which will help your hair grow longer,” says Dr Dadu.

Ingredients for DIY deep conditioner for hair

Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp coconut milk
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 2 tsp olive oil

Before making this DIY deep conditioner for your lifeless, dry hair, here’s how these ingredients can help. They can definitely reverse all the hair damage you have knowingly or unknowingly done to your hair.

  1. Coconut milk

Just like coconut oil, coconut milk is a thirst quencher for dry and brittle hair. The natural fatty acids in coconut milk are known to revive your lifeless hair. It is gentle on your mane, so your colored hair is not susceptible to fading. It is great for hair as it has a high concentration of lauric acid, a kind of fat that hair can easily and quickly absorb. Lauric acid provides moisture to help nourish hair and tame frizz.

“Coconut milk is packed with vitamins and fatty acids to help your hair look healthy. In addition to this, it helps get rid of any sebum buildup. Coconut milk can also help to treat dandruff by boosting the skin’s good bacteria, taming inflammation and fighting dermatitis. The cuticle-smoothing properties of coconut oil make it an effective anti-frizz remedy.” adds Dr Dadu, weighing on the praiseworthy qualities of coconut milk.

2. Mayonnaise

If you’re somebody who cannot deal with the egg’s smell in your hair but miss out on its wonders, hail mayonnaise! Unflavoured mayonnaise consists of beaten eggs and oils. It can soften your hair shaft and nourishes your fried ends, minus the yucky smell. Dr Dadu says, “Mayonnaise is filled with proteins and fatty acids that are needed for hair growth and conditioning.”

3. Honey

Thank the bees for this sweet syrup which is the perfect solution to your hair problems. Honey has been used for centuries in folk medicine for wound treatment and to repair skin due to its natural antibacterial properties. “Honey is able to provide the same skin regenerative properties to the skin of the scalp. It provides a great deal of moisture to the hair and scalp,” says Dr Dadu. Due to honey’s emollient and humectant properties, it has proven to soften the coarse hair by hydrating them. Honey not only smoothens the flyaways but also restores the natural sheen of your hair.

4. Olive oil

Rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, olive oil has a unique chemical composition obtained naturally by pressing olives. Known to strengthen your hair follicles, olive oil has a soothing impact on the scaly and dry scalp. Speaking of the hair health benefits of olive oil, Dr Dadu says “This oil can seal moisture into the hair fiber, which helps with elasticity and results in less breakage. It penetrates the hair strand and reduces the amount of water the hair absorbs which, in turn, cuts down on shrinkage and frizz.” This oil can even stimulate hair growth. A total winner, ain’t it?
