While everyone is busy celebrating the festival of lights with sweets and firecrackers, there is a huge setback that your hair could face during this festive season. The temporary pollutants in the environment at this time can result in the rise of greenhouse gasses which affect hair health adversely. So, here we’re revealing a few tips to protect hair from the pollution damage.

It’s pretty impossible to avoid pollution after Diwali, however, there’s always a way to protect yourself.

Follow these 5 tips to protect your hair from pollution this Diwali:

1. Hair protection is a must

First and most important thing is hair protection with either a cap or cover your hair with a head scarf. It might sound weird but here’s why it is required.
Exposure to Particulate Matter(PM), Nickel, Lead, and Arsenic can lead to a condition called ‘Sensitive Scalp Syndrome’ which may happen when this PM settles on the scalp and in the hair shaft. This leads to common symptoms of burning, stinging, dry scalp, vague discomfort in the scalp and/or paresthesia of the scalp. A steam bath post Diwali celebration is essential to get rid of the particulate matter from the body as also the hair but remember do not step out of the house with wet hair.

2. Moisture retention

During this festival, it is very common that the scalp and hair gets dry and looks lifeless. A warm oil massage to improve scalp circulation and applying this oil to the tips of the strands will form a protective layer over the hair shafts so that particulate matter settles on the skin and layers of the scalp. This matter decreases the level of proteins, especially keratin production in the follicles and cells. You can also try applying a protective serum to avoid damage.

3. Nourish your hair follicles

While picking the right hairstyles is one way to protect your hair from playing with firecrackers (for example, styling your hair into updos and braids), but if you really need to nourish your hair for proper hair growth and protect hair from air pollution, you need antioxidant supplements. Collagen supplements can help you to not just reverse the damage caused by particulate matters but also improves hair quality and growth throughout.

4. Hydrate yourself

Finally, yet importantly, it is necessary to drink an adequate amount of water or consume foods that contain a lot of water. Get enough sleep, exercise, eat a protein-rich healthy diet, keep stress away and enjoy your Diwali to the fullest.

5. Balance your sugar levels

Sweets during Diwali are obvious but maintaining a balance is ideal since excess sugar damages the gut bacteria and causes hair fall as a side effect.
