Winter is all about hot chocolate, sweater weather and fuzzy blankets to stay cozy. However, the season can have a certain effect on our scalp as well. The cold can lead to dryness which might cause what many refer to as ‘winter dandruff.’ It is characterised by a flaky scalp which can be itchy and uncomfortable. What’s more, it often leaves most of us embarrassed!
As winter ushers in, the time for many of us to experience winter dandruff is here again. For some, it becomes noticeable by autumn itself. But, that’s no reason to not enjoy the pleasant season. All you have to do is indulge in some hair care hacks to ensure your scalp stays clean, hydrated and healthy.
Here are five DIY hair masks that will keep winter dandruff at bay:
1. Coconut oil and neem
Coconut oil is known for its moisturising properties given the excellent content of fatty acids and vitamins. Combine the goodness of coconut oil with neem, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and you will have the perfect protection against dandruff.
Combine one teaspoon of neem powder with 4 teaspoons of coconut oil. You can adjust these quantities according to your hair length. Heat this mixture slightly for the best effect. Massage this on your scalp for 20 minutes and wait for about an hour before washing your hair with a mild shampoo.
2. Aloe vera and apple cider vinegar
Most of us know that aloe vera is great for hydrating our dry tresses but very few know that it has antifungal properties that can be beneficial for our scalp. Apple cider vinegar, on the other hand, can help balance the pH of your scalp and hair. Many say that it is extremely effective for those who want a natural gloss for their hair. Moreover, it has antibacterial properties which prevent infections on your scalp.
Mix two tablespoon of aloe vera gel with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Add four to six tablespoons of water to this to dilute the mixture. This is important because apple cider vinegar can irritate the skin if applied without dilution. Keep this mask for 20 minutes before washing it off.
3. Fenugreek seeds and hibiscus
Fenugreek seeds have a high protein content which strengthens hair and prevents dandruff. Rich in vitamin C, hibiscus can help strengthen the hair roots and ensure that hair fall stays at bay. Combined together, these two ingredients can help you avoid hair woes during the winter season.
Soak two tablespoons of hibiscus seeds overnight along with a hibiscus flower. If you have hibiscus powder, you can avoid soaking the flower. Next morning, grind the fenugreek seeds and the flower and seeds. You can add a teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil to this mixture to adjust the consistency. Apply this to your hair and keep for 30 minutes before rinsing. If you have extra time on your hands, you can keep it on till it dries completely since it would prove to be more beneficial.
4. Tea tree oil and olive oil
Tea tree oil has excellent antibacterial properties and olive oil is extremely hydrating for your scalp. These two ingredients can prevent dandruff by keeping infections and dryness at bay. Something to keep in mind while using tea tree oil is that it needs to be diluted to avoid any irritation. Hence, avoid using it generously. A couple of drops go a long way in keeping your scalp protected.
Mix 5 drops of tea tree essential oil with 3 to 4 tablespoons of olive oil. You can adjust the quantity according to your hair length. Massage this on your scalp for at least 20 minutes. Let it rest for 30 minutes before washing it off with a mild shampoo.
5. Banana, lemon and honey
Banana is extremely moisturising for the hair and scalp, something that is needed during the dry winter season. Lemon is known for its powerful cleansing properties that can ensure your scalp stays clear of build-up which can lead to dandruff. Honey, a natural humectant, ensures that your hair is able to retain moisture. When combined, these three ingredients can make for the best hair mask for winters.
Mash one banana and mix it with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 2 tablespoons of honey. You can adjust the quantities depending on your hair length. Apply this to your hair and let it rest for 20 minutes before rinsing with a mild shampoo.
